There's been fresh snow in the French Alps overnight and the snow is still falling.
It's the first significant snowfall at most French ski areas for 50 days.

It follows earlier accumulations of 30-40cm in the Eastern Alps and Austria where it is still snowing more heavily with some resorts posting accumulations of 20-30cm more overnight.

Parts of Switzerland have reported similar snowfalls and Germany's Zugspitz says it has had 35cm of snow in the last 24 hours.

Most resorts in the Alps are now posting snowfall pictures and live video on social media but figures on snowfall accumulation are only just starting to be published, however forecasters expect 30-40cm for many resorts by the end of tomorrow, and possibly much more over the coming week, although longer term forecasts are more likely to prove inaccurate, although they may prove correct. The images in this report are from Val Thorens this morning.

Although the snow is the first fresh snow since the first half of November, most of France's major resorts had still had most of their terrain open through December thanks to large pre-season snowfalls in early November, which had allowed several to open early fort the 2016-17 ski season, and subsequent snowmaking.

Some lower traditional resorts like Megeve and Morzine had struggled with very thin snow cover down at resort level however.

Although most French resorts have had no more than a dusting of snow for the past 50 days, a few including Bonneval Sur Arc and Val Cenis received 20-40cm of fresh snow in the week before Christmas.

No real change as yet Andy, but a succession of light snowfalls now in the forecast for next week.

Worth watching the forecast and webcams over the next few days though; the current snow is pushing into The Alps from the North and how far South the bulk of it will get isn't yet clear. Similarly, support is building (in the forecast models) for a big snowfall Tuesday and Wednesday next week and - again - that might go as far as Serre Che.

Thanks for reply, off to Serre Chev this weekend, assume ample snow there right now?

They're claiming upper base depths of nearly 2 metres and "soft" snow so I'd expect the piste conditions to be pretty good. Should be quiet next week and, with a bit of luck, you might just see some of next week's snowfall getting upgraded as the storm tracks become clearer.

Yay! Finally some snow. I actually went skiing today, not touring, but real downhill skiing, the 2nd time since the start of my 2-week holiday. I also went on the first day with a friend to make sure skiing was not worth it :) Today I only lasted about 6 runs before bailing though: the viz was really poor and slopes were unusually busy considering the weather, but I guess everyone had been missing skiing on real snow as much as I had. Next three days should be nice and hopefully winter will finally start now.

I think we got maybe 15-20 cm total, not a real game changer, but made skiing more pleasant. Whoever is going on holidays next week should enjoy it way more than those who went for Christmas break, especially with less people on slopes. At the moment it's still busy, but tomorrow is a changeover day and less people are expected to come than to leave.
