Hi all

4 of us travelling to Gatwick(210 miles) soon and i need to load 4 luggage bags and 3 double snowboard bags into the car . 4 luggage bags will go in the boot but the snowboard bags won't fit in the car,i have roof bars but not a roof box and i don't know if they make a roof box that i could get 3 bags in or cheaper enough for me to consider buying .I've thought about bagging the bags up to make waterproof then bungee cord/strapping them to the roof bars but not sure if its the best way to do it . :-)

What have you done or how would you do it ?

Sounds like the way to go, but check the loading limits of the bars / gutter / whatever they fix to...

Alternatively, you might be able to get them couriered to Gatwick for you? Probably less expensive than a big roof box?

I'd sell the snowboards, hire skis in resort and buy a round of drinks with the change. Job jobbed. Hope that helps. 8)

You can buy magnetic roof carriers which have good reports. I bought one two years ago but have never used it just stuffed the skiis into the car. For a cheaper alternative you can buy a rack type system for surf boards I think it was about £40 a bit off a Fidel to make sure it's secure but does the job , takes up little storage space and much cheaper than a box. All depends how often you are going to use and how much you want to spend.

Hope this helps

Cheers for the suggestions , the roof bars will carry 75 kg and our bags normally weigh around 16 kilos each .
I will sell the snowboard one day but whilst i can still take the knocks and falls i'll stick with the single plank :-)

I would worry about wrapping the board bags in plastic bags tied to a roof rack. Things have a habit of slipping loose when wrapped in plastic. Board ski bags are made of water proof material, but the seams, and zippers may let a little water in. Might be better to use plastic bags inside the the board bags if needed.

Use straps with cam locks like these http://www.ebags.com/product/sportube/roof-rack-straps/214831?productid=10138719&sourceid=ADWPRODUCT&couponid=94790994&gclid=CLnzuNiY1LsCFclaMgodzQYAdQ&kwid=productads-plaid^56405059338-sku^10138719-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^33611621178. I take any excess strap through the bag handles and tie the end off to the roof bar. If the bags do become loose, the loop through the handle will stop them falling off.
because I'm so inclined .....

Cheers Daved but even with the boards in something like that we'd still need to get the bags in the car with us and with 3 little rucksacks and a mates ski boots bag there won't be much room for 3 folded up board bags .

Good idea about putting the stuff in the bag in bag and i have plenty of those straps knocking about, cheers Trencher .

Totally off topic but i am so glad i live only 10miles from my local airport.
210 Miles is a bugger before you even start your hop.
