It depends upon the 17 year old and the parent in question.
My dad taught me to drive. I then had two lessons to fine tune my driving to suit the test. Took the test and passed at 17 years, 5 months.
At the moment, that's the approach I'll be taking with my two children.

How many??? I thought 18 was a lot when I did my lessons. Passed first time though :)
My dad took me out a few times, I do remember one incident where he was teaching me how to reverse and I was trying to get out of the drive, I seemed to have a very heavy right foot that day (apparently I still do) and we shot out across the road, fortunately I slammed the brakes on and my dad leapt out of the car whereupon all my dad/daughter lessons ceased.

Congratulations Bedrock Barney
It's nice to know that you and your dad got on so well when you were young :D
I had 12 lessons and passed in 12 weeks myself, over 30 years ago. But I learned to drive on the tractor first, which was actually much easier because it had a hand throttle and went more slowly, and once I'd learned the basics in the field I was out on the road on my own (with L plates up of course!).
Best of luck with teaching your own kids :D
The most important thing is to remember to breathe

From what I have seen and heard I think it is much harder to both get to grips with the road and to pass the test nowadays.
1976 - 8 lessons, practice with dad - pass - 17 years and 4 months. I was by no means the quickest of my gang either.
I would strongly suggest a couple of lessons to get the bug (hopefully) and then really push that theory test through. Once this is under your daughters belt she can concentrate hard on her lessons and some practice with you before her test.

Sorry everyone - I omitted to mention the important fact that my daughter has already passed the theory test - second time around!
She started driving when she was 17 but dropped it because she couldn't spare the time. So she's having another go at it now, at the age of 18.
