Have the chnace the go to the rugby world cup in NZ next year which starts late September, wondered if there was a chance of getting out there for a week or two's skiing beforehand or would i be just a wee bit to late i the season ?

You should be ok at that time of year. I skied NZ at the end of August/beginning of Sept last year and snow cover was more than sufficient.
Also judging by current snow standards you would be fine (the Remarkables had 23cm snow last night and Coronet Peak 10cm!)

There should be excellent spring skiing that time of year in the North Island at least,that time this year there were even good snowfalls

I agree, you'll be good. Just watch out for the weather (depending where you go), it can get pretty crazy...
