We are tempted to try Austria this coming season. Not interested in night life, just good interesting skiing. Any info about Scheffau, like snow conditions end of January, distance to ski lifts, queues, will help. Not very enthusiastic about ski buses. What area could one ski without using them a lot? Is Pension Aloisia a good choice of accomodation?
Thanks, guys

I'm going at New Year, there will be masses of snow! Ski buses are a fact of life on most of the schiwelt. You can get directly onto the lift at Ellmau.

I love idiot watching on ski buses, especially the idiots who are not prepared for the idiots who climb on with skis on shoulders and get clobbered in the process. I'm sure this is the real reason for helmets.

Saying that, tunnels are the worst.

Thanks for the info, guys. Good to know snow is almost:) sure. As for the ski bus it seems it's a fact of life if one chooses skiing in Austria. If the service is good (regular and bus is not packed), that's ok. It is probably a very short ride to the starting point from where a vast area could be explored.

I have always likened ski buses to cable cars, just when you think its full the other half arrive.

We were in Scheffau last January and there was a lot of snow and a lot of variety, you can ski around the Skiwelt to different resorts. Some people lost their way and had to get a bus back into Scheffau so don't get lost.
We stayed at the Waldrand, the rooms were nice and the food was OK but not out of this world.
The bus runs from the centre of the village and it only takes 5 minutes at most to reach the gondola station. I think the busses are quite frequent because they only do this short run.
If you are not bothered about nightlife you are in the right place because there is none. We only found 2 quiet pubs in the village.
I think the Pension Aloisia is just across the road from the gondola, so you could probably walk it.
