Hello guys

I've been staying off here on purpose, if anyone had noticed and was wondering :D, because I'll not be skiing again till next year but..

...looking ahead to the family ski hols come next Feb, I'm starting to shortlist some resorts. We were originally going to go back to Niederau but the spell has now been cast off and I realise there are plenty of other resorts out there. I was on the WTSS website and came across their review for Schladming. It's very highly rated. Just wondered if any of the usual suspects here had been and what their opinion of the resort was. As usual, top of the resort requirements list is family friendly resort and top notch ski schools....

Or would St Anton/St Christoph be a better choice?

Hi Coops, skied Schladming with my family and big group of friends this half term. Group included some young children. Their parents said ski school was great (they used the one at Rohrmoos) and their kids certainly improved over the week. The resort is great - nice town and a brilliant ski area. I was really impressed with the lift system, apart from one or two slow two-man chairs up from the bottom stations. Pistes were immaculate. Bit busy, but hey, it was half term. It wasn't cheap, but they've invested heaps in the ski area and there's a new 8 man chair going up this summer. Four big mountains to ski, big vertical drop, varied pistes (a bit limited if you are advanced). Go for it.
I've also skied St Anton a fair bit and loved it, but I'd say Schladming is better for kids. St Anton is huge and very lively and much better for advanced skiers. Massive off-piste. Cheers - enjoy!

Ah good, someone progressing from N and looking for a good Austrian ski area. Having not been to Schladming, I cannnot comment, but its high on my hit list as it ticks the boxes for me - decent area, varied terrain, good snow record, plenty going on off the slopes.
I have been to St Anton and its a fabulous ski area but not somewhere for anyone who has only a couple of weeks skiing under their belts to be honest. Its quite hard skiing generally, but a "proper" ski town to enjoy. Not the cheapest though.
You might want to consdier Lech as an alternative to St Anton as the skiing is more relaxed and cruisy over there.

Went there about 10 years ago with small kids. Really liked it. We used the kindergarten for the children and they enjoyed it, although there weren't too many English speaking kids there. Their skiing improved greatly.
Town is lovely, though it was New Year and noisy at night. It has a great atmosphere and the bars are lively - nothing like French nightlife at all.

Skiing was good, we skied from Rohrmoos too, you get a bus up and it takes about 10 mins. I get the impression the 4 areas are better linked than when were there, so it can only have improved.

I would go back.

Last year was the first time we have not been to Schladming in 5 years so that must tell you something. The Ski school at Rohrmoos was spoken well of but cannot comment on it personally. Mountains are fantastic, spoilt for choice on the mountain where to eat. The big ski cabin at the bottom of the Planai has taken IMO abit of atmosphere from the town but lots liked it. It is not a place for youth looking for clubbing.
We were a mixed group of good intermediate and some advanced skiers 40-50 yrs.
Its less than an hour from Salzburg airport and for those who want to get there on their own steam, its has it own railway station which is about just over an hour from Salzburg also. Happy to answer any more questions.
There will not be loads of Brits there which we always liked.

We have been skiing in Schladming/Rohrmmoos since 1968 and love it!. SchiSchule HOPl, in Rohrmoos at Schi Lenz and on the Planai mountain is a fantastic ski school who have been brilliant teaching our 12 year old to ski. The facilities are excellent with new lifts and slopes added practically every year. The locals are very friendly and immensely proud of their town and village. Rohrmoos has many hotels and guest houses and Schladming is busier with lots of night life and good shops and restaurants. The mountain restaurants are great with hardly a self-service in sight. Rohrmoos also has one of the longest toboggan runs in Austria. Not cheap, but hen you have to pay for all the investment they have made over the years.
