I am looking to go skiing for New Year in Austria, after nearly fainting at the cost of this excursion I have found a reasonably priced deal in Zell Am See for a week, I really wanted to go to Solden but just can't afford it.
Has anyone been to Zell for new year or Xmas, if anyone can give me a few pointers I would appreciate it before I spend all that money

I'll be in Kaprun from 4/12/09 for a break and then Zell am See from 9/1/10, I love the area, people and the skiing. This will b around my 8th time in the area. Planning to do new year in Zell next year.

If theres anything specific about the resort you want to know - ask away and ifI can help i will.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks Dave
I would liked to have gone after New Year but I am limited to certain times for my holidays because of work so New Year or Xmas is the only time I can go.
I really want to go glacier skiing so i have looked at both Solden and Zell but Solden was just to expensive (nearly 2000€ for 1 weeks skiing driving there myself from Romania, no ski hire, no lessons).
Zell looks nice, I am beginner / intermediate level but my wife is expert (skiing since she could walk)so we need a resort that will suit us both.
How is the nightlife, I don't want complete madness but I don't want it to quiet either (probably a stupid qustion considering it is new year)

The bars in both Kaprun and Zell are good and quite a variety. It's one of the reasons I keep going back - really good vibe and lots of life, but not quite party central with drunken idiots. Just a nice mix of ages/sexes/nationalities.

Some nice restaurants on the mountain to (in Zell).

Shame we're not there the same week, could have shared a beer. Maybe next season!

Theres a reasonable mix or runs and the blacks are quite entertaining (especially run 14 in zell), both 13 & 14 are in the shade for much of the run so tend to stay in reasonable condition.

I've always been there with fairly mixed ability groups from beginner through to expert and we've always found something to keep everyone happy.

If you want a little extra variety - and since it sounds like you will have your car with you get the one of the passes that allows you access to more resorts for not a lot more money. We've bought the Super Salzburger lift pass for the week in January (which gives acceess to Saalbach-Hinterglem just a few km down the road as well as many other resorts in the area) and it only cost us about £9 more than the standard Zell/Kaprun pass for the week.

Have a good one.

Sking on the Kaprun glacier is good, but can be bleak when the weather closes in, but of course thats when you retire to the tree lined oslopes of Schmittenhoe in Xell.

It seems just what I am looking for, I think I am going to take the plunge and book it this week.
I need to deal with a Romanian tour operator to get this deal which is never easy.
" Yes Sir, I can book that for you, just pay me all the money up front and I will give you this hand written note as a booking confirmation, credit cards? Sorry sir my machine broken but I accept big wads of cash especially euros or pounds" but fingers crossed :D
