We want to go snowboarding in French Alps, and would like to know where we can find
* good snow in January
* nice town
* good off piste for boarding

And any views, experiences about La Plagne, Val Thorens, and Les Arcs is welcome..

Thank You..

Hi,

Paradiski (La Plagne/Les Arcs) is a massive ski area, probably one of biggest in the world and has a great snow record because of its high altitude. Off piste is fabulous throughout the area due to been able to get fresh tracks days after a snowfall. There is also a great park.

However Ste Foy is also a mecca for boarders, infact a lot of the sponsored teams go here for photo shoots. We always ride here after a dump. The atmosphere is really chilled and is a cool place to be. The off piste is second to none.

We know all this because we live here, and love it.If you want to know any more please get in touch, you can find our contact details on www.skivillaroger.com, as well as details on our accomodation.

Val Thorens is a good choice for plenty of snow and variety that the three valleys offers. However Val Thorens as a place to stay is a bit bland and can be quite noisy. You might want to consider Courchevel although still a purpose built resort I think it has a little more to offer.
Tignes is another good option with plenty of snow and scope for off piste riding. Early Jan and the resort still has all of the Christmas lights up so at night it looks great.

Forgot to mention that your expectation of off piste riding needs to be tempered by the fact that in early /mid jan the snow is likely to be dumping big style with the obvious implications on the stability of the snow pack.

Yes we agree re stability of snow, but you can always hire a mountain guide who always has your safety as first priority. Also where we are situated(Paradiski) our guides take us heliskiing in Italy, as we are so close to the Italian border, as it is not legal in France.This is a totally awesome experience.

Why not try La Clusaz

We had excellent snow last January and it's a lovely unspoilt french town with a go nightlife. The off-piste over at La Balme and Etale is good and there is always the nearby resort of Le Grand Bornand for more! There is info on these two ski/board resorts at www.gravite.co.uk/piste.php[/url]
