We're planning our first family skiing holdiday - Week beginning 28th March.

Looking at La Thuile. Interested in anyone's comments as to how good this would be for beginners.

Also if we go with a tour operator, should we book the all inclusive Learn to Ski packages or just sort out when we get there?

Hi Catriona,

I went to La Thuile in January and had a brilliant time. I have skied for many years but my girlfriend had never skied before. The amount of long, wide and gentle blue runs are perfect for beginners and the fact that its pretty much a big bowl means you can easilly get from one place to another.

I would book the lessons through the tour operator. If you have a familly, the last thing you need is to be trying to organise even more stuff. Just pay them the money and let them tell you where and when to turn up.

My GF had group lessons that Nielson (tour company) had booked and after 3 days was doing some easy red runs and they went into France (La Rosiere) in the last 2 days which she enjoyed the novelty of.
Hope this helps, have a great time.

I had a great time in LT, the only downside the runs back to resort can be a bit tuff for a beginner but as smirnoff said plenty of open cruises to practice on, Apres on the quite side few restaurants and bars scattered around but not exatley a rocking resort which suited us.
There is a fantastic black there I think it is number 2 or 3 on the piste map named after some Italian skier can't quite remember who but pretty steep gets the adrealin flowing I'd keep clear of that one.

Its Black 3 I think Wickers, if my random knowledge serves me correctly, it is too steep/difficult to run a world cup downhill on!

Hi,

Agree with all the other comments about La Thuile. We were there over New Year and it was brilliant. My wife is a perpetual beginner and loved it. Easy, very wide blue runs at the top of the mountain, and yes, even my wife's ski school group went over to the French side during the week!
Yes, it's black 3 which is the very steep one, but only at the top. You can enter black 3 a bit lower down (just below the top gondola station) and it's fine from there.

I'd certainly book lessons etc. from the UK. It worked fine for us, and actually was cheaper when you look at the pound:euro rate (but that might have changed now).

Hope you have a great time - wish I was going back !

Thanks for your comments. We've now gone ahead and booked, including Learn To ski packages. Can't Wait!

Totaly agree with all the above comments. Went there end of Jan and had a couple of beginers in our group. Lessons booked with TO (nielson) and by day 3 they were going over to France. Im sure you will have a great time.

P.S dont forget to try the ice cream/cakes and mulled wine in the little shop around the corner from the supermarket. Any other advice you need on this resort just ask.
