Am I right in saying that Kitzbhuel is fairly close to Niederau. If so is it easy to go there for the day or is it too much hassle or expensive.
Cheers

It is about half an hours drive, driving over the hill to Hopfgarten.
It is possible to get there via Woergl, but this might take an hour longer.

Its a doddle to get to, particularly if you have a vehicle of your own. Mind you, so are a lot of places. Niederau is a great place to base yourself to explore other ski areas. Kitz is about the closest big resort, although you can get onto the Skiwelt at other spots. You are not far from Hopfgarten or Westendorf there.
Dont forget mayrhofen and the Ziller valley is less than an hour away too in the other direction, towards Innsbruck.

You don't need to drive all the way to Kitzbuhel just through Kirchberg is a gondala called the Fleckalmbahn which has a huge car park and you never need to park that far away from the lift. This takes you from 800m to 1800m in one go to the main bowl from Kitzbuhel. It takes about 25 minutes from Niederau.
Hopfgarten which links into the SkiWelt area is only 15 minutes away from N but at New Year was mega busy and was not as easy to park as Kirchberg so we only went once. The ski area is well connected and larger than Kitzbuhel so if you are going out of season will be a good option. The All Star card (which covers N, Ski Welt and Kitzbuhel plus others) is 205 Euros for 6 days - only 50 more than the Wildschonau Pass so in my opinion well worth it. It does not however cover Maryhofen...
As Tony says N is a good base for touring many other ski areas and a lovely place to wake up and spend time in the evenings - enjoy
