We are picking up a 9 seater minibus at the airport on 20th December and driving to our accommodation in Kaprun which is just off the main road, does anyone know whether or not it would be wise to hire snow chains and if so any idea of the cost :?:

I've been on the road to Kaprun from both Salzburg & Munich in fairly heavy snow and as yet never had any problems, the winter tyres got me through fine. The roads are all pretty good , no steep gradients and well snow-ploughed.

But theres always a first...and you don't want to go sideways into a ditch.

Check with whoever your hiring the minibus from, several times with hire vehciles I've found that they already come with snow chains boxed up in the boot just in case. If there not issued as standard then I would have thought the hire company will have the correct size/type available for hire at a reasonable cost.

Enjoy Kaprun - conditions were great when i was there 3 weeks ago, should be even better now!

Salzburg Airport, so will be bound by Austrian law ~ should be supplied by winter tyres. Check the ts & cs. My memory is that the road into Kaprun town is not steep, so the issues are not the same as going up to a high valley resort.

In most countries in Europe it is a legal requirement to carry snow cans, if your traveling by car they are a must.
