Hi folks,

planning a trip in April and want some help;

is it better to stay in Meribel (more fun, prettier) and ski over to Val Thorens or stay in Val Thorens and endure the high altitude?

Meribel is in the middle between everything, so oy ucould do a day in courchevel, a day in Val T, a day in La Tania etc.

Personally, I think Meribel is a far better option. From there it is possible to ski anywhere in the 3Vs whereas its takes a lot of time to get into the Courcheval valley from VT - I prefer to enjoy my skiing rather than putting myself under pressure reaching far away areas and getting back before essential links close :shock:.

I also think Meribel is a more attractive resort, even if it would be unusual to hear French spoken. Haven't stayed in VT but I suspect apres ski is better in Meribel.

I agree with everything said above but if I was going in April I would choose Val T.
Meribels lower slopes are south facing and can suffer later in the season, for all the other reasons I would choose Meribel but I do like to finish the day on snow rather than slush and mud.
Having said that we could have a great season with loads of snow in April :)

VT will have the better snow in April, and you can ski to other parts if they are open.

In the 5 seasons I did in Meribel (a long time ago now!!!) there was never a problem with snow up to mid-April. The slopes were always well looked after, and the snow in VT resort wasn't ever any better, although good snow could be found high up.

Meribel is the best place to stay in the 3V due to easy access to all the skiing. :wink:

Meribel is much prettier and there is much more to do - however there is a slight risk with the snow.
However having skiied in VT in april before it is luck of the draw wheather you have gd snow or not (although thats the same everywhere) The problem with VT is that often it is very icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon.
If you can it might be worth trying to get a late deal, that way you can look at the snow conditions before booking

In April it is very slushy down to Meribel in the afternoon. You need to ski above 2000m to avoid it which is why VT might be the better option. Saying that you can always take the sensible option and travel back down to Meribel in the cable car and avoid those ankle and knee injuries that prevail at that time. The Apres is supposed to be lively in VT but the resort lacks the prettiness of Meribel but is less spread out.
