Hi everyone,

Only 18 days to go till my Mayrhofen trip and I can now smell the snow (at least i think that's what it is)!

As I only have four full days skiing and dont know the area I am unsure how best to use the time i.e. am I best to stay round the Penken side or travel further afield. Myself and my group are intermediate skiers. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers :)

Hi

The Penken area ought to be sufficient for you for 4 days, unless you really want to cane it!

By the time you have taken in Horberg, Larchwald, Gerent and gone up the cable car from the bottom of the Horberg area you'll have done plenty of skiing.

There is also the option of skiing to Finkenberg if you fancy going further afield, without taking any time out of your day "travelling" as its all skiable. Katzenmoos is a particulalry enjoyable run in good weather.

Have fun!

Morning

Its 9 days until I go, cant wait now.
Skidaddle's suggestions are spot on. Penken gives you plenty of skiing for a week, let alone 4 days, although if you want to try a different run every time, you might want to pop down to Zell and ski over to Gerlos. I intend to do that this time, as I feel like i know Penken like the back of my hand now.

Can I make a couple of suggestions for your time on Penken:

1. Get up reasonably early, but avoid the 8.30 rush. Either go up at 8.15 or leave it til 9.
2. Have a couple of warm up runs on the front side in the sun, skiing reds 1 and 11, and take the 6 man Penken express back up each time from the bottom of the beginner slopes, its much quicker.
3. Ski red 5 over the back and then take the Schneekaar up to the top of the Horberg and stop for a drink just past the Gerent chair lift on the way back down again.
4. Make your way over to the 150 man cable car by taking the Tappenalm 8 man chair, and working your way across the board park, and then have a few runs over the back of Rastkogel where its always sunny and much quieter, with plenty of wide open runs.
5. Take red 16 back down into the valley again, but be careful as this doesnt get any sun towards the end, and is a tricky run across a ridge, and is often icy on the final decent.
6. Then take the Nordhangbahn chair up to the top and have some fun on the runs down towards Finkenberg.

You might not manage to do all this in one day, but certainly in 2. I find its best to have an early lunch on Penken, around 12, and then head back out for 1 when the ski schools stop, so its a lot less busy. Mind you, mid Jan isnt going to be too busy.

I also recommend a morning/afternoon on the Ahorn. Its a limited ski area, but the Ebbenwald red 4 is a lovely run, and if the weather is good enough you can ski back down into Mayrhofen on the Ahornabfahrt - very tricky but brilliant when you have done it. There are new lifts and bars on Ahorn this season.

9 days to go. Bring it on. I will be there from Jan 12th, Skidaddle joins me on 17th, and I believe Ellestine from this forum is also there for a week from 12th. Looks like you will be arriving just as I leave. Have a great time.
