Have you been in Gudauri, European Georgia.Resort "Gudauri” is one of the most valuable places in Georgian tourist industry. Mountain-skiing resort is situated in 120 km from Tbilisi, on the height of 2000 above sea level. Here the best conditions are created for professionals and amateurs of skiing. Season continues from December until middle of April, and sometimes snow cover is so big that you can ski even in May.

Today, five ropeways of the company "Doppelmayr” work (three and four-seater). First ropeway (the lower station) is located on the height – 1990m; the third – 3006m. The total length of skiing lines constitutes 19km, and they are constantly treated by special cars. The longest line in Gudauri is 5 km. Many free rides make Gudauri the best place for skiing.

[On reflection I'll let this stand - without the link - even though it is promotional rather than chatter, it does highlight an area of the world in which few of us have skiied and some may be interested - Admin]

Rossfra8,

Of course not! It is the ropeways that he is promoting. They are very modern. You get a very long pole to help you balance yourself as you walk up the ropeways.

The free cars are for any skier that makes it to the top!

That is why I love to be part of this site, So much color and varied cultural differences. It would take year for Dave to explain the subtle differences between marketing and chatting.

Let's face it, the 2014 Winter Olympics is to be held in Russia so it's obvious that whole area will be developed significantly over the next 5+ years, I only hope we don't end up with another Bulgaria i.e. 2nd hand 40 year old lifts and dodgy food :!:
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

not really very funny. If you were a lift operator and going to the conference of your industry you'd be going the to the "International Ropeways" conference, held last year in Austria as it happens. If you were buying a new lift you might buy it from Leitner Ropeways, that's the bit of the business that makes ski lifts. So the original poster uses the correct term even if it's not what the general public use it's the term used by professionals and industry insiders.

I think you have no much information about Ski Resort Gudauri & Georgia. :)

Austrian and Swiss Experts which have made a research rated Gudauri as one of most perspective ski resorts of Eastern Europe (as you know the highest mountains in the Europe are in Georgia - Caucasus).

Last winter much Austrian, Italian and German tourists visited Gudauri As you know there was a problem with snow in whole Europe.

I’m interested have you ever been in Gudauri and what information do you have about this resort?

Hi.

Personally, I have a real interest in Eastern Europe, and if that involved skiing as well, I could think of nothing better. Places like Ukraine, Russia, Moldova etc are all becoming more accessible, and look incredibly interesting. I watched the Ewan McGregor Long Way Round programme from a few years ago when he went round the world through Russia, Kazakstan, Ukraine, Russia and Mongolia, and it looks wonderful.

I have a friend from Odessa who tells me that the black Sea coast is fast becoming THE place to buy property, and will soon be one of the top resorts in Europe to visit. I would like to visit Ukraine, and would jump at the chance to ski somewhere like that.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
