Hi - we are a family of 3 (2 adults and our 16 year old son). We are spending 1 week this xmas in st johann in tirol at the gasthof park hotel. This is our 3rd year skiing so would class ourselves as 'improver beginners'! Can anybody please recommend where we can hire skis/boots, which ski school to use and which lift pass to get? We usually book all this through the ski company (crystal this year) but have decided to try and save some money (if poss) and book these direct.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Never been to St Johann but you can get ski school info off the net and compare schools and look for feedback. To be fair most of the ski schools in Austria are pretty good so you should be fine. As for skis/boots click on the link on this website for online booking and get a discount for booking in advance. As this is your third trip i would seriously consider buying your own boots if you are going to keep it up and it looks like you are. With the right fit they can improve your skiing and you are not messing about renting every year, they really do make a difference and you'll get your moey back after a few trips 8)

thanks for this info - will look into links you suggest - we did think about getting our son some boots so might be a good idea for a chrissy present.

If memory serves me right, the Park hotel is at the bottom of the road to the Gondola. You can walk from the hotel to the gondola in about 3 mins. There is a ski hire shop about 100yds away from the hotel. It's behind the Chinese restaurant.
For cheap ski/boot hire do a search on the following:
SnowBrainer, SkiSet, Ski Rental. Once you have looked at all 3 and compared you will find they are much cheaper than renting via Crystal. I have used them all and they are all good and reliable.
You can get the train from St. Johann to Kitzbuhel. You would need to check if you need another pass though as I can't remember if the St.Johann pass covers you. The train journey is only about 15 mins and the station at Kitzbuhel is at the bottom of the Gondola. Well worth the trip as the area is much bigger than St. Johann.
Anyway, enjoy.

Cheers

It might be worthwhile buying boots in St Johann if you have time There are several shops including a very large supermarket size sports shop in the town centre Some TO's have discount vouchers you could ask

The sportsmarket is a bit overpriced, I hired mine from the shop behind the park hotel. a days lift pass for Kitz was 20 euros this year, train fare was about 6 euros and takes approx. 15mins. st Johann's pass covers 3 other areas which I found plenty enough(did take 2 days off to spend with the wife). I booked again for next year I enjoyed it that much.
Enjoy :)
