J2Ski

Edgeoftheworld posted Feb-2013

I've decided not to go skiing alone for my next trip and looking for a group or another solo skier. I've been skiing once and made some progress but need to work on the fundamentals. I'd like to go with others in the same boat.

I don't mind where so long as there are plenty of wide green slopes. Alpes d'huez seems a good choice for this as apparently it's great for beginners trying to get the basic skills down. I'll ski anywhere that's beginner friendly though.

Let me know if anyone is interested or has a group and room for one more.

Thanks! -)

You should PM AllyG who is organising our J2Ski Group Trip for 2014. We have lots of solo skiers in the group of varying levels.
I can see my house from here...

Having read your previous post about lessons etc, I seriously suggest you don't spend too much on a resort that has a big ski area as you're really only likely to ski a few slopes on a weeks worth of lessons.
Also, look for somewhere really cheap in resort las France will cost you a lot of money and as a beginner I don't think you'll feel the benefit of a mega resort.

Suggestions:
Andorra
Bulgaria
Small Austrian resorts such as niederau which has a very good rep for beginners

Alpe d'Huez is a fantastic resort to ski and whilst it has greens for beginners, as a solo travellermyoumreallymwouldnt benefit from skiing it yet. Head there when you're able t get around the mountain.
www  New and improved me

Thanks Tony, this is a very good point! Just didnt even occur to me how little area I'm going to cover. I've been looking around the last hour or so and found this gem of an article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2012/nov/18/cheap-ski-resorts

Judging by peoples comments, some of the info might be a bit inaccurate but close to what I should be aiming for I think. Including Bulgaria and smaller Austrian resorts. Niederau looks good too, and just need to make sure I can get good coaching where ever I go as I assume most of the top instructors will be in the big resorts.

I'll keep digging

Although its not the best "holiday" a week in Romania is great for lessons, poiana Brasov has all inclusive weeks which is really all inclusive including lessons 9-5 for 6 days, a bit like boot camp but if you want to progress fast in a week can't recommend highly enough, looks like snow is ok there at the moment, won't be the best conditions but that is part of the learning curve.

I was actually looking at Poiana Brasov last week as an option. I'm not really fussed about the holiday part of it, just want to get better with good instructors and not be broke at the end of it. Some of the deals listed on j2ski are around £500 (650 Euro for me) - is this reasonable for the resort? What were the lessons / instructors like? I hope their English is good because I don't speak any Romanian :D

£500 is good especially as the deals are (or were a few years back) all inclusive, a similar week in France would be around £800 as a guess. It is a fairly small resort, by the end of the week you should have cracked the whole lot. Lessons were superb best I have had (both in France and Italy since) and the instructors all had perfect English (I think it's mandatory). It's fair to say snow conditions are not up to high resort European standards but in my case this meant that my next trip to Europe on good snow was even easier, suppose if you learn on some ice and slush good snow is a breeze! As I said its a bit boot camp, very eastern block hotel, it was clean but not what I would call salubrious, food was ok a bit samey wine was passable. 100% glad I went moved my skiing on leaps and bounds, but would not go back now!
