We are going to Sestriere 28th Feb for 6 days
Can anyone remember some of easier red runs and any of the hardest(steep) on the Milkyway

We are all over 40 and only just started skiing reds last year, last 3 years have all been at Pas de la casa but tackled most of the reds over there

Also could we ski to claviere and back in a day

thanks

If you have the full Milky Way pass some of the ones I enjoyed are around Sansicario. The 79 runs into the Black (nothing to bad) Olimpica which was great fun and my wife who had steared away from blacks skied that and black 21 running along side. The 93 over in Claviere was great fun along with most of the reds in Sauze. Didn't spend any time Sestriers side this year.

There isn't a difficult red run in sauze, one or two steeper and more testing ones over at sestriere including the banchetta Olympic course. But they're all wide and any reasonable intermediate will handle anything in these 2 areas.
I didn't ski claviere but I think it would be better to take a day on a bus over there and montgenevre and ski tin while you're there as otherwise you'll probably find its a big ask getting there and back in a day.

I reckon that Sauze d'Oulx is a perfect progression from Pas de la Casa. In fact Sauze itself is no more difficult than Pas (much nicer though IMO). As others have already said, the more difficult stuff is around Sestriere and Sansicario.

My mate learned to ski in Sauze. On the first two days we would kill ourselves laughing as we watched him from the chairlifts. His 'constipated statue' stance was unmistakable  . By the third day he was able to follow us around the Sportinia bowl and by the end of the week he was able to make the trip (by bus) to Montgenevre.

Claviere and back in the day isn't a problem if you're keen enough, but it's much better to go on the bus to get a full day's skiing over there. The reps will probably try to sell you a trip; or you can take a bus down to the town of Oulx, from where there are/were regular buses to Claviere.

We found the SCGB rep (Chris) to be a mine of useful information. Don't know if he's still doing it but he was always to be found in Paddy McGinty's bar early in the evening.

Hope this helps and have a good one :-) .

I skied sestriere this year 5 days from 2nd jan and just about to book to go again in march some great red suns in sestriere if you look at the piste map you can quite easily spend all day on various red runs we found runs 62 63 and 66 great long wide pistes with a lovely restaurant at the bottom also a 4 man chair that links which never gets too busy after lunchtime, never queued too long for any lift in sestriere and we were still in new year holiday season, I think the area is big enough for you to spread out! If you want to push yourselves try the black at very top of mount motta which you go up a steep drag lift to get to its the start of Olympic run its really good and not like French blacks, its also wide so nothing drastic! Also San sicario loads of reds and sunny side of mountain I really enjoyed my first time skiing there this year! We were based in sauze!

We are staying at the Villaggio Olimpico soi guess get the cable car and ski down to Sauze on the first day to get our ski legs back
If we were to try a black run what would be the easiest one (Black 21)???.

We will be buying our passes when we arrive ,and will only have about 4 1/2 days skiing so wont get the Montgenevre for free like the 6 day pass.

thanks nick

That sounds like a good plan. A morning in the bowl at Sportinia will give you a taste of the easier action and help get your ski-legs back before you tackle anything more strenuous. You could then, perhaps 'bob' back over to Sestriere for some of the more challenging reds there. In good conditions, none of them are overly difficult, so you should have loads of fun.

I think there are 'easier' blacks than 21 (can't remember which ones though). If memory serves me right 21 is the FIS Downhill run to Sansicario. It's a bit dodgy to recommend black runs to intermediates, but as I said before I think you have chosen the perfect area to progress from Andorra. If you have skied any of the blacks in the Grandvalira area then think of the blacks on the Milky Way as no steeper but a fair bit longer.

Yes 21 is in San sicario but Olympic run in San sicario is better if you want to try shorter blacks then sestriere number 9 where it's a red then short back then red again !
