Abondance

Hi! Has anyone skied in Abondance (Val d'Abondance, 11 km de Chatel)? Can you tell me how was it? Is there enough snow for Christmas?

I've been to Abondance a few years ago but not when resort was open. The place is pretty. The snow situation is very difficult to predict generally. There were years when as late as mid-january you could still see brown and even green on hills and some years it can be all white by mid-November. For snow-sure you will need to look at resorts that will have a glacier, like Saas-Fee/Zermatt in CH or Tignes etc. in France.

Lovely village but a bit isolated if you want to enjoy all the benefits of the Portes du Soleil ski area. Abondance itself is not snow-sure so you may be better off looking at Châtel, or perhaps St Jean d'Aulps or Morzine.
Check out the Portes du Soleil website to see that you can cover great distances on skis and by using free shuttle buses. Unfortunately, Abondance isn't well connected enough to make it that attractive for skiers but would make a gorgeous winter wonderland escape for Christmas for example - but you'd need the snow!

Hi Re: skiing in Abondance, the ski slopes are unlikely to open this year 2012, however don't be put off by that, the skiing in La Chapelle (less than 5mins)and Chatel (15mins) from Abondance is absolutley fantastic and of course you then have access to the whole of the port de Soleil, biggest in europe! Having a car is an advantage and there are also ski buses. I know because I have chalet in Abondance and go very year. Can't wait for the snow to come this year...
