Hi.
Trying to decide where to go in early Jan,i've been to Austria and Bulgaria a couple of times and thought about trying Alpe d'Huez as i thought it would be pretty reliable with it being a glacier.Just looking for a bit of feedback really on hotels/quality of runs etc,as it seems to get harder to decide where to go the more you look at the brochure's. Cheers.

Alpe d'Huez, or the Massif Des Grandes Rousses, which is the name for the entire ski area linking Alpe dHuez to several other villages and resorts, has an excellent January snow record. Lift queues are virtually non existent, there is a wide range of pistes for all levels, excellent off- piste itineraries and several very much better mountain restaurants than in most French ski areas.
Alpe d'Huez, itself ,is excellent for night life. If you prefer something quieter, with easy access to the entire ski domain, try Oz-en- Oisans. It is a delightful small resort with good runs back directly to hotels and apartments and two fast lifts out, one to above Alpe d'Huez and the other to Montfrais above Vaujany. It is the 'buckle of the belt'.
The Massif Des Grandes Rousses is an outstanding and large, but for some reason, under-rated ski area. I recommend it highly.

We visited in February 2003, and stayed at Royal Ours Blanc hotel. The skiing was excellent and varied and lift queues were minimal. You can cover a great area in 1 day and there are some really good mountain restaurants.
The hotel was okay. Quite basic rooms but did the job. I have seen a few people mention good nightlife, but my hubby and I were bored after 3 days as the resort is very spread out and there is not a main central area that is buzzing with restaurants and bars. In fact we struggled to find enough restaurants that we wanted to visit! Overall, if it is purely, good snow and miles of piste that you want , then it is a good bet, but be prepared when the weather closes in, there is nowhere to hide and the resort can become very very bleak.!!

A bad day on the slopes is better than a good day in the office !

I agree that the area immediately above Alpe d'Huez is rather bleak when the tough weather sets in. However there is very good, and often quiet skiing, to be had at Auris, Vaujany and Oz en Oisans among the trees. Links to all of these locations , by lift, are fast and easy.
