We usually venture to Austria and are new intermediates (I still prefer nice long wide blues!). Which resort is the best for a couple who enjoy skiing with relaxation, abit of apres ski and nice food?

I have been to Arinsal twice, it is a gondola up from the village centre (or a single chair if you are at the Aparthotel Crest) and this opens up a few runs, and you can then get the gondola link over to Pal, which offers different skiing. There used to be a good website Arinsal.com, don't know if it still exists and the pub to go to was Quo Vadis, run by some very funny South Africans. Be warned if you decide to go into Andorra la Vella at night, taxis are few and far between, there only appear to be about 5 in the whole principality!!
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

Id say Soldeu, as its on a big linked area and has a good range of more up market places to stay, eat and drink compared to Pas. Arinsal is really a beginners area.

I disagree slightly with that, we were a mixed group of beginners and intermediates and it kept us occupied and out of mischief, that said it does depend which end of the intermediate scale you are and if you are at the newer end, I would have said Arinsal was fine. Pas just seemed (and we only dropped people off in the centre there) like a big stag party commercialised type place - I know on the way back to the airport we were late because we had an early departure and some were still coming out of the discos and bars to collect their bags. Long transfer of 3-4 hours.

Skiing in Andorra is certainly different to the rest of the Alps but that said, been twice and both were good fun!

Not been to Arinsal but have been to Pas, Soldeu and El Tarter.

Soldeu is my first choice as it offers good skiing for intermediates and lots of it. The town itself is good for apres and is definitely not a roudy party town, so it is a good place to relax too. There are plenty of restaurants, but I am not really able to comment as we were catered for and the food was great so didn't need to eat out. We did eat out every lunchtime and I had no complaints...I can be quite a fussy eater!

Best skiing in Andorra is at Arcalis.

What he said ^ Arcalis = AWESOME!

And arinsal.co.uk is still very much alive and kicking and a good place to check.

Haven't been to the other ski area so can only speak for Valnord but that lift pass covers Arinsal, Pal and Arcalis and it got me through the intermediate stage without ever getting bored. If the cable car is running from Arinsal to Pal it opens up a load more intermediate level runs. Have to agree Arinsal itself is more for beginner levels so take advantage of your lift pass!
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Not been to Valnord ski area but know that it is a lot smaller than the Grandvalira. I also know that Valnord areas are not all linked unlike Grandvalira, which as I have mentioned in other posts somewhere, has had a lot of money spent on it over recent years and they are still spending.
