Given the choice of resorts in the area, I'd suggest Monetier or Villeneuve, pleasant rustic villages with good choice of bars and restaurants. Villeneuve is bang in the middle of the ski area and decent lifts choice to get up the mountain.
I've stayed in a chalet in Villeneuve (no longer available), a chalet hotel in Villeneuve (Rocket ski, cheap as chips but a bit like a prison camp) and an apartment in Briancon, a larger town with not much of a ski base feel to it.
A mate stayed in a hotel in Monetier.
I suggest you look at Ski Miquel, they have a couple of chalets in Monetier and have great reviews. I may be wrong but I have a feeling they may not charge massive supplements for solos.

Where abouts are you staying in the area?
I can offer some advice on drinking holes, places to eat in Villeneuve, and also on some of the best runs, depending on your ability.
Plus some tips on how best to get up and around the mountains.

Similar to Tony, we have stayed once in Chantemerle, twice in Villeneuve and next week will be our third stay in Monetier, which is definitely our favourite. I would also highly recommend Ski Miquel.

Thanks both; I'll check them out. From everything I've heard I think I'd really like Serre Che.
