We are going to Seefeld on 14th Jan. Although the webcams show good snow cover I am a little worried about the forecast. It seems to be fluctuating from quite cold (Just below freezing) to mild with some rain. This is not good for the pistes. Has anybody any idea when the weather will cool down over there ?

Thanks. I think the trend is for colder temps with more snow later, so hopefully we'll be ok :D

Fantastic snow there two days ago. Bottom stretch at Roshütte can get hard or slushy (not great as it is much used by beginners) but was fine. On balance Seefeld was not far from being at its best, though not perfect. No fresh powder, but Seefeld is not the place for that. A few little tracks beside the piste, fun if you like that kind of thing. Pistes a bit compacted but no too-shallow snow (there never is), no slush and virtually no ice. I would have gone again yesterday, and walked up on touring skis (so as to earn that mulled wine at Hochegg hut), but went elsewhere as the road is now closed owing to risk of earth slides, which makes the trip that bit longer. I guess the trains are unaffected.

It is true the weather conditions are not good for pistes, but they are pretty active with their snow canons and pisting machines at Seefeld, so generally the skiing is OK, except towards the end of the season when (not being very high) it is just a bit too warm in the bottom half. And if you take a chair lift from the botton at Rosshütte you end up on the less used side, where there is an (optional) shortish but steep bit of black run which can get very treacherous when icy. Generally best avoided. Otherwise Seefeld is very reliable.

Hey thanks !

That sounds promising, although I do hope it is possible to ski right down to the village when we go. It looks as though the forecast is pretty good. The mulled wine stop sounds good to me ! Where are the best apres ski bars ?

Sure you can ski to the valley station, always, at Rosshütte, or the smaller piste on the same pass behind the village, Gescwhandkopf. You can never ski right into the village center but it is a shortish walk or shuttle bus. Plenty nice bars, one or two with folk music, I cannot honestly remember their names. And a the state-run baths and spa is pretty swish, with a great warm outdoors pool.

Just now the snow is out of this world. And the best ever time to head off into the woods, for example if you come out of Hochegg hut there is a little path heading down to the right, at the bottom turn right, and you have amazing fresh powder among the trees, just go slow as it is a bit near the cable car and anyway you want to stay safe. I walked up yesterday on touring skis that way, and had a gentle pootle down through the woods after a glühwein at the hut (with some hilarious falls, not being an expert at skiing in the woods!). Great fun and afterwards you find your on-piste skiing has improved. But also on piste the snow is the best ever, and the scenery (always a strong point at Seefeld) is a real winter wonderland.

There are closed roads and railway further out from Innsbruck but you should get to Seefeld without problems.

Thanks for all the useful info. From worried about not enough snow, now worried about too much ! Oh well it sounds fantastic now and I would think the Austrians will have the roads clear in no time, bit like the U.K.! Hah ! Don't think we will be going off piste though. A nice week trundling the blues and reds (with several stops for a tipple or three) will be fine. Thanks again :D

Flying out to Seefeld in just over 4 weeks' time, and you have got me really fidgety here!! :D I'm already checking the webcams several times a day, so what I'd be like close to the day I don't know. Your reports from there are getting me quite excited INnsbrucker! I hope this mild stretch they're getting doesn't last all of 4 weeks!!! :-o
Bant a ni!
