A Metre Of Much-Needed Snowfall Transforms Pyrenees

With some ski areas seeing over a metre of snowfall in the Pyrenees over the past seven days, resorts in the region are reporting transformed conditions for the final quarter of the season.

Many resorts have announced they're finally planning to open all or most of their terrain, with Formigal (pictured above), which has had only about 30% of its runs open all winter, saying it expects to have the most open in the Pyrenees, 140km, available this coming weekend. Larger areas have not yet said how much they'll open though.

Best Snowfalls Of Year in Western Canada

Ski resorts in Alberta and Eastern BC are celebrating after some of the biggest snowfalls of the season.

Ski areas around Banff in Alberta including Norquay (pictured above yesterday), Sunshine and Lake Louise, as well as Kicking Horse and Panorama over the border in BC have posted up to 20cm in 24 hours, whilst Jasper's Marmot Basin to the north posted 25cm in the same period.

Fresh Falls Brings World’s Thickest Snowpack Towards 5m

Heavy snowfall on high slopes in the Alps has seen the deepest snowpack in the world edge towards the 5 metre mark.

Unusually, The alps have had the world's deepest snow all of this season, a title normally held by a US or Japanese ski area, however the 'El Nino Effect' seems to be suppressing snowfall in North America and East Asia.

The Austrian Tirol - ideal for a late break (now with even more snow!)

With longer days, sunnier slopes, and warmer temperatures, late season skiing in the Austrian Tirol is fantastic. As the Tirol is home to five glacier ski resorts, the conditions remain consistent until much later in the year. Plus, many resorts host events from March onwards; fun can be had on, and off, the slopes.

New Snow in the Alps

The snow has started falling again in the Alps and the first snowfall totals for Friday morning are in. The snowfall is expected to continue for several days and bring half-a-metre plus to higher slopes at some areas by the end of the weekend. Most areas report heavy snow falling at present.

Huge €70m Spend By Slovenia On Ski Area Upgrades

Slovenia's government has made a huge investment in new lifts and other upgrades to many of the country's ski areas.

Slovenia's Ministry of the Economy, Tourism, and Sports Restructuring Funds have splurged on no less than 11 new lifts across nine ski areas and lots of other upgrades too.

Dry Ski Slope Returning to Burning Man Festival

The BRC Snow Club which has been a Burning Man theme camp for several years and last summer brought a dry ski slope to the famously hot, dry and dusty festival in Nevada have announced their intention to return with an enhanced slope in 2024.

Gwyneth Paltrow Ski Trial Musical Heading to Utah

A musical based on the infamous ski trial court case between Gwyneth Paltrow's and optometrist Terry Sanderson is heading to the state where the legal battle took place, Utah, as part of a US tour.

"Gwyneth Goes Skiing" was conceived and created by Awkward Productions and debuted in London shortly before Christmas. In will open in the US at The Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah, although dates have not yet been published.

Parsenn Derby Celebrates 100 Years Since First Race

The Parsenn Derby, one of the world's oldest downhill ski races, will celebrate a century since it was first staged above Davos in Switzerland, with its 2024 staging on 29th February.

The race, still one of the world's longest despite various route changes over the years, takes place on a 12.5km long route from Parsennfurka down towards Küblis over 2,000m of vertical. It was conceived by a 1920s English spa guest, Fred W. Edlin, and created by the Ski Club Davos and the Davos English Ski Club.

Nissan Create X-Trail Model For Mountain Rescue

Nissan have created a version of its X-Trail e-4ORCE extensively modified for mountain rescue needs.

Those modifications include the replacement of the wheels with snow tracks, giving traction on slippery pistes, while the rear seats have been removed to allow the installation of a stretcher, to allow the transportation of injured skiers to the nearest medical facility, and a seat for a medical professional.

Another Major Snowstorm Hitting US West

The second series of big snowstorms in a fortnight is starting to hit the Western US, with most ski areas in California posting at least a foot of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

Donner Ski Ranch posted the biggest overnight snowfall of 17 inches (43cm) with Palisades Tahoe (pictured) and Mammoth Mountain both posting 13" (33cm) in the same period.

Conveyor Ski Slope Coming To Wiltshire

A farm in Wiltshire has won planning permission to install a 5.5m high ski simulator machine in its barn, alongside a new climbing wall.

Bapton Manor Farm, located in the Wylye Valley, approximately 10 miles outside Warminster, plans to use the disused barn to provide the indoor mountain activities to locals and visitors alike and provide jobs, according to its successful planning application to Wiltshire Council.

The 4,000th Carpet Lift

Today, it's hard to imagine that less than 30 years ago, beginner skier and snowboarders often had to master the drag lift almost as soon as they mastered their dreaded snowplough turns, snowboarders sometimes faced with T-bars.

But since the mid-1990s the conveyor or 'carpet' lift has become synonymous with nursery slopes, as well as proving useful in dozens of other on mountain uplift scenarios.

The Swatch Nines returns to Murren in April 2024

Norwegian Glacier Plays ‘Hunt The Ski Lift’

Inghams, UK’s 2nd Largest Ski Hol Co For Sale, Family Holiday Offshoot Closing

Hotelplan, the company that runs UK's second biggest (and also second oldest) ski holiday company, Inghams and several other smaller travel companies, has been put up for sale by its current Swiss owners.

In a separate move, which it says is unrelated, Inghams has announced the closure of their childcare division Ski Esprit.

Snowfall Returns to the Alps

After three weeks of largely dry conditions and temperatures much warmer than they should have been for late January and February, temperatures and dropping and snow is falling again.

The change, after the three-week warm spell which led to widespread media stories that there was no snow for skiers in the Alps despite most resorts remaining fully open, is bringing stormy weather this weekend to many areas, leading many to close slopes or in some cases (including Lans en Vercors) the whole resort until Sunday.

(Much Needed) Snowfall in the Pyrenees

Heavy snowfall is reported in the Pyrenees as colder, snowier conditions arrive in the southerly European mountain range that's home to more than 50 ski areas in Andorra, France and Spain.

Although most of Western Europe has been suffering from a prolonged period of warm temperatures and dry conditions for the past three weeks, thankfully now ending, the problems caused had been greater in the Pyrenees where there had been less snowfall in November/December last year for base-building and temperatures had been the warmest - with highs of +22C reported.

Californian Resort Reports 7 Feet Of Snowfall in 6 Days

A huge snowstorm that has hit America's Pacific Coast over the last seven days has brought torrential rain and flooding to some low lying areas, but heavy snowfall to the region's ski areas.

Mammoth Mountain was one of the big winners, reporting 7 feet (2.1m) of snowfall in six days.

Alterra Raise $3 Billion

The Alterra Mountain Company which was established in 2017 and run 17 of North America's leading ski areas including Mammoth, Deer Valley, Palisades, Steamboat and Tremblant, are reported to have raised a further $3 billion to invest in improvements at their resorts.

Ingunn Brings Powder Dump to Scandi Ski Slopes

Storm Ingunn which battered northern Scotland with severe gale force winds but wasn't named in the UK, gathered force to become the most violent recorded storm in Scandinavia for 32 years, and where it was given a name, closing many ski areas in Norway and Sweden on Thursday and Friday. Winds of up to 180kph were reported, blizzard conditions and much damage done.

New Gondola From Base of Vallee Blanche Opens

The new Mer de Glace gondola that takes skiers and boarders up from the glacier at the end of the world-longest lift-served ski run, the Vallée Blanche above Chamonix, has opened this morning.

The lift replaces a gondola built three decades ago to where the ice was in the early 1990s. Subsequently more than 550 metal steps had to be created below its base station and the glacier as it rapidly thawed away. Ascending the steps at the end of the run in your ski boots carrying your skis became a greater challenge than the run itself.

Big Snowfalls Hit California

February has started well in California with the biggest snowstorm of the season so far hitting yesterday and more snow on the way.

Officially Mammoth Mountain reported 12-14 inches (30-35cm) at its main Lodge yesterday morning, but unofficially there was much more higher up the slopes too

Man Makes 24km Vertical Climb on Skis In 24 Hours to Break World Record

A professional ski mountaineer, Jakob Herrmann, has set a new world record by ascending a total of 24,242 vertical metres in 24 hours.[/b]

This beat the previous record of 23,486 vertical metre set by Kilian Jornet in Norway five years ago by 756 vertical metres.
