Ski touring kit?

Just wondering if anyone can help me out? I'm thinking of having a go at touring this winter and want to get some cheapish kit to try it out. Ben, have you considerred hiring the equipment. Freinds of mine did the Haute route two years ago & all of the equipment was provided by the guide for an extra €150. Skis, boots, skins, harness, crampons & axes. I thought this was pretty good value, suppose it depends on how many days ski touring you are planning for this season to get best VFM.
