I went through this forum quite a bit, and noticed many "go get your lessons" posts.
There seem to be a different perspective elsewhere though, as I have heard of "keep practising" motto.

As for myself I did start off with a couple of hours of lessons, because I am a firm believer of building the right fundamentals. But having learnt the basics, one should be able to figure out how his body works, to observe and to imitate, or at least work via a "spot" or buddy system to improve, experiment or learn something new.

So, just taking a poll, are you guys instructors or do you *really* take lessons as you ski every season? (as a non-professional) ...or do you practise, practise, practise?

i think lessons should be the scaffolding for you, and the rest is just practice and experience to get you down the slop at the best of your ability

Practise is good if you are doing it right, if you aren't practising the correct techniques it isn't much use because you will just ingrain bad habits.

It is hard work for an instructor to try and go backwards in someones skiing than it is to start with a blank canvas...

But "hard work" is what the instructor's paid for, isn't it? ;)

Once you have something instilled in a certain way, it can be particularly difficult to 'unlearn' it.

Edit: Instructors aren't paid enough for 'hard work' ;)

I'm a reasonable enough skier, in that I can get myself down most things with a modicum of style and grace.

However, every time I go on holiday I have one 2 hour private lesson. I've never failed to learn something, and so far, it's never failed to improve my skiing in some way. last week it was invaluable for learning to ski deep powder, and massively increased my confidence. The rest of the time is practice and fun.

I don't take lessons any more but I did for the first ten years 8)

I always have a private lesson or two just to get back into the swing and add some more skills. With only skiing once a year I find them invaluable. I can then spend the rest of my holiday practising.
