Could anyone offer an opinion, go on, be cruel, but not too cruel

On and off for the last 20 odd years I've been visiting the slopes with the family, but just as I had the opinion that I wasn't hanging around and I was giving my son a good run for his money, Saga went and pushed a bit of junk mail through my letterbox and suddenly reality hit home.

When I was younger anyone over 21 was old, but time has moved on and I've passed the big 50, I also have friends that are 12 or more years my senior who are still well active. I'd like to think the present 50 is yesterdays 30, but I'm sure I'm pushing that a bit. )

I work at a UK University and I've got used to the feeling everyone else is, in the main, younger than I, and I'm comfortable with that. 8)

Each year I've always used an instructor, possibly not needing, but we've always used one, mainly for the purpose of a local guide and in the process there's always something to be learned. They generally segregate people into their abilities, but in most cases there's an "old codgers" group.

So I've just booked a holiday at Saas-Fee (Comments please?) for later this year and was wondering if this is the year I go into the codgers class? I don't want to get frustrated, I can still whoop the young tea tray surfers, but maybe no-one is telling me to ski in my slippers yet.

Any comments?

dont accept it....once your over 50 [ as i am] its your own attitude that matters,,,just dont look at the young girls , otherwise they give you the old man look..
forget the ski instructors , if you dont need them....

40 is the new 25. 50 is middle aged. One of my mates is 50 next birthday, and I always thought of 50 as being old, but he isnt old in any way, apart maybe from his rapidly disappearing hair, but that can happen at any age! 50 cant be old anyway, as its my next landmark!
60 is definitly old, and I would say Old Codger refers to retirement age. This comes from the experience of a weekend away with father in law (67) in Krakow last week, and he was showing signs of being an old codger by the way he ate, dressed, waved his hands about when talking to people, and generally faffed about. He didnt do that until he was retired, and used to referee at a high standard until a couple of years ago!!

I turn 53 next week, and I don't see myself as an old codger just yet and age is all in the mind, I can't ski the same as I did thirty years ago but I ski perhaps for a different reason, my passion for mountains is greater now.
My goals were to ski the mountain together with my daughter who's 7 and she now ski's all but the blacks, so every year now is a bonus, and I have 11 weeks and counting till ski time. :D

My in laws aged 61 & 64 came skiing with us last year, both as complete novices. They had a brilliant time.
I learned to ski a couple of years ago and the oldest in my group was 74!!
