I think we've done this before... but here are some...

You might recognise one of them...

As I've posted before on this subject - my wife won't go out on the slopes without one:

VT 4 years ago - out of control fat Italian on a blue run into village (in sight of the magic carpet if you know VT). She was knocked out, had a broken nose and cheekbone in 3 places that needed surgery on her return to UK. The angle of impact on her goggles meant she could have lost an eye.

No I don't think they should be compulsory (I wear one sometimes and grumble, when I wear a hat I miss the extra warmth...) but I think that anyone who dismisses them as pointless and causing accidents in and of themselves by people thinking they are invincible can come and explain that view to my beautiful wife: why her nose is no longet straight and why she has 3 pieces of titanium in her skull for the rest of her life... She wasnt wearing one, the idiot wasnt either. If they both had they'd've bounced and she'd have had a ringing headache at worst, if she had and he hadn't then he'd be the one with a smashed skull.

Its a choice pure and simple - but don't deride anyone who's choices are different from yours peeps

Oh and Ive seen plenty of instructors wearing one in France, Austria and US

What we should be debating is not be who wears helmets but whether the statistics justify the press's banner headlines and biased reporting

Good point - went a bit off topic myself

Yes - this is "Daily Mail" journalism at its worst - no doubt non-ski helmet wearers are all immigrants on benefits..... )

I have never taken part in such a debate. However, here goes.

I started wearing one 3 years ago, mainly because I started finding myself going down harder runs and I wanted to feel that my brain cell(s) were protected as much as possible. Yes, I have fallen over and thought, "thanks god I was wearing a helmet" - but you will never know what would have been the result if you hadnt, would it just have been a case of snow in hair (or not for the folically challenged)

I hate to say it, but I think there is also an element of fashion in wearing one. Shock horror, fashion in the slopes!

But each to their own.

It's probably only a matter of time before helmets become compulsory anyway, so enjoy the debate while you can...

For my own part, a small backflip following accidental reverse snowplough on a red in the 3V, resulting in me landing head first on ice was all the encouragement I needed to wear a helmet in future....that and the moronic out of control french "lady" who smashed into me, then swore at me before carrying on, without a word of apology...

Get over it, wear a helmet, that's the message...it's not just about what YOU can run into...it's also about what can run into you...

I started out skiing without one like most but would not go without my helmet now. My son is really impressed because I have a large scuff mark on mine where a ski obviously tried to take half my scalp off and the helmet saved me. Funny thing is I can't actually remember the impact as I was rolling down a slope at the time on my face, it was my own ski that was responsible..... ooops, helmet saved me from myself in this case!

And on a more important note..... I also find that wearing one stops my hair from sticking up at odd angles, its works wonders as a hair net for those of us more fashion conscious ladies.

Doesn't it get uncomfortable in the night?
Mind you could see it helping to block out the noises from the paralytic late night crowd staggering home.
