After the recent Australian invasion into Niseko scared off some of the long-time happy returners; it's about time the powder hounds came back to J-land and got some of the fluffy stuff again. Hakuba has long been known of; after all; the 1998 Winter Olympics were held here; but people seem to prefer the mellow slopes and guaranteed snow of Niseko. Average snowfall in Hakuba: 12m/year!! And there is actually steep terrain here; unlike Niseko. (best you carry a beacon and take an avalanche course before going into the back country!)
I don't want to see my private paradise overrun like Niseko was. But surely we can have a happy medium that will help the dire local economy?!

Thanks for the info on Hakuba. I have been considering it as a possible destination as I want to experience the real Japan without too many Australians. What is it like in terms of crowds?

Well, obviously there are some lines on the weekends and peak holidays. But there is still plenty of untracked stuff all the time off-piste. Also; the town and area are still quaint and Japanese; unlike Niseko. Plenty of good deals abound in all price ranges and for all ability levels.

Hi there.

Hakuba (Happo) is a great option, and I can also recommend Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen. They are the best and biggest ski areas around Nagano prefecture.

Nozawa Onsen

Shiga Kogen

The accomodation starts around 50 pounds (half board) to 150 pounds, lift pass is around 20 pounds or so.
On weekends, there might be some queue, but shouldn't be that bad. The longest queue I have experienced was 45 mins to get on to Big Gondola but that's rather rare. Usually up to 5 mins to get onto normal lifts.

Hope this helps.

It was nice knowing you, if you are going to spam us you could at least post some decent pow pics of Japan otherwise you really aren't welcome.

Cheers.

When spammers stop by, J2skiers do rather enjoy a good stoning session :D

So does that mean you're giving me a free holiday including flights, drinks ( Could be expensive that one ) accommodation and also feed me for a fortnight cause it is not worth going for a week, you're a generous guy and as long as my tickets are though by Monday week you can eat as much spam as you like.... :hunf: :hunf:
