It depends how you are travelling ..car train air?
Car ..I would ..and do ,,have a roofbox averything goes in and is kept dry and safe
Air..a good ski bag that is well marked so it stands out when you get to the receiving airport so no-one can mistake it for theirsin my double ski bag I could get lots of other softer stuff in as well
Train ..I would get a solid one with wheels

OK,thought long and hard before posting this, but here goes.
For long enough the likes of Crystal ski have ripped us off for ski carriage. Ie you can have a ski bag weighing up to 22kg or around that, but it can only have one set of skis in. But you could fill it with anything else as long as it was not another pair of skis or a board. Now to my mind weight is weight, so whether it's a lump of lead or another pair of skis, why should it matter?
So, what I do is, get one of those plastic ski tubes that take 1pr of skis. Then I take the bindings off the skis and put them in with the hold baggage. If you do this on 2pr of skis you will find that you can get 4 skis into the tube.
I have done this for years now so only paid for 1 set of ski carriage.
Now that I have said this though, if CrystalSki read it we are doomed.
But it's time we fought back!

Interestingly, BA and Lufthansa allow you to take your 23 kg allowance in a ski bag if you wish, which may include skis and other stuff; the only inconvenience being that you need to check it in at the oversized bag gate, but that's no real issue.
