Personally I wouldn't go back for a long time, or at least till they sort out a lot of problems that seem to occur their.

If you google bulgaria ski forum you can read all about it, it's also a great source of entertainment with people being banned from the site for just saying about a bad experience they might of had :D

Hi
We went to Borovets end of Jan last year and we had a fantastic time.

It is a budget hol and the food is never hot - we had half board in our hotel and then ate a pizza or kebab later in the evening. It was ok though. The best thing about this place is the price of everything particularly drinks as it is so cheap but not ideal for kids. I didnt see any ladies hanging around - possibly in some bars but no one obvious.

The skiing was good for beginners but for med / more experienced skiers its limited and the gondola was closed most of the week due to it being windy.

It's a good cheap drinking place for fun and ski but wouldnt recommend for families or kids.

Hope this helps.

You get what you pay for in life. Avoid the cheap places with bad reports like Bulgaria, but steer clear from the other end of the scale where everything is a rip off, like Courchavel and Val d'Isere.

Hi we went to Borovets in march 2008. There were 23 of us 10 adults and 13 children staying in the Rila. It was a mixed group 13 beginners and some who had skied a bit and me who hadn't skied for 17 years and had always been to Niederau skiing, so Borovets was an eye openner.
The ski instructor they had was called Irvanna she was great she taught all the beginners well and by the mid of week had them up the gondola on the mountains easy runs. Like all the instructors she was always on her phone, but she was good with the group. The lifts are old and the gondola belongs in thunder birds, and the lift operators are miserable gits. When they shut the gondola if your up the mountain, Tough you have to walk down to the middle lift if you cant ski, what ever the weather.
The kids had a brillant holiday the pool at the rilla was fine although it has no shallow end, and the floor around the pool area gets v wet and slippery. In the evenings the ski slopes are flood lit till 9.00pm so you can ski if you like, are lot brought toboggans and spent hours out on the slopes in the evenings the piste machine drivers just drove round them and the people out drinking in the other pubs kept buying them drinks for a go on their toboggan! There is a good bar/ restaurant(wood Shack)called The Crown next to the slope so you can keep an eye on children. Vasco and co looked after us all week good drinking and good food.
The hotel studios are basic but you have a cooker and fridge there is a mini market shop at the end of shops under the hotel near the ski hire shop, you can buy juice crisps biscuits etc for kids. The food in the hotel was ok. Plenty at breakfast and anything you wanted really much better then we had at the Harfenwirt in Niederau over this New Year. Always loads of coffee, fruitjuice, hot chocolate, cooked bacon, fried bread etc, fresh rolls and fresh fruit that was excellent and good to take up the mountain. The food in mountain restaurant was expensive tray of chips 10 levs about £4.00. Evening meal was abit hit and miss always roasted meat of some kind but you could all find something. They cook pizzas to order so kids were happy.
Borovets has got quiet a few interesting pubs clubs pole dancing bars etc but none of are group had any hassle. Some of us were out drinking till 4-5 in the morning a couple of nights the most hassle they got was the lift breaking and having to climb out a 18 inch gap. Look out for Jimmy the waiter bit like max wall he'll sell you any thing fags , euros etc.
The ski hire equipment wasnt good, my skis underneath looked liked they had been over a rocky place several times, very worn. boots were ok.
Borovets isnt the best place in the world but I enjoyed my skiing there and the instruction for the learners wasnt bad as my girls were fine on are holiday recently one even managed a red run. Hope this helps Bernie k
