We went out to Merdassier over the New Year and even then the queues were fairly short and the pistes uncrowded. We only had one dumping of snow mid week about 8 inches which was really needed as the snow cannons had been firing a couple of nights. The conditions then were not a patch on how they looked in your pictures.

I stayed in Le Charvin which was a 50m walk from the mid point on the blue chair lift run. Perfect for popping back for lunch and being back on the piste quickly afterwards.

Im off to Austri next year but Im definately going back to Merdassier (hopefully when the kids have gone back to school).

Hi Dean, Glad you had a great time and enjoyed Merdassier & La Clusaz, it is a great area for kids and it is the first time that I felt comfortable with letting my daughter off the leash without any dangers due to the lack of people and snowboarders ..... nothing against boarders but they seem to be the ones who are sometimes out of control on the pistes !!!!.
We were based at the bottom at the Panoramic apartments right next to the far drag, but we had to walk a couple hundred metres to the ski school meeting place but normally did this without skis & boots.
The apartment building higher up where you stayed looked pleasant enough but it seemed a bit isolated from restaurants ..... how did you find it, when passing on the chair I could not see any restaurants or bars ??

Hi Ian, it was a little isolated but it was a short walk down to the restaurants and a tiring one back up after eating a large meal. There is a mini bus taxi service you can use (if youre lazy) but we walked it. We skied down in the mornings to the meeting point as we were just off the piste.

It wouldnt put me off staying up there again its not a long walk, but I guess if we had the snow you had it would have been a bit harder. There were plenty of boarders around when we went and I think the ones we saw were either brilliant or all over the place which meant I improved my avoiding skills significantly.

As its been 23 years since my last ski holiday I was finding my feet the first few days and mainly skiing the blues but by Friday (we went on Sunday)I had skied all of the reds down into La Croix Fry. Next time I think i will venture more into La Clusaz and the wide open runs over the road.

I enjoyed the far drag lift, especially when it nearly pulled my arm out of its socket on the first ride! The benefit of staying where you were was definately the close proximity to the shops and restaurants.

My favourite part I guess was the lessons with the ESF. Our instructor Sebastien spoke fantastic English and really bought my Son and my skiing on significantly. With only six friendly students in each class it was well worth the money.

What a coincidence Sebastien took my daughter for her gold level, he was no push over and expected high standards for her to pass, but a good guy, I don't know if you know that he is the main man for the region for building those wig-wham things or they might be called Tee-Pees, he had to go off to Chamonix one day to build one for them .... where about in Austria are you off to ??

That is a coincidence. We had a diverse range of skiers in our group, my Son and I can ski and needed improvement on technique but some of them could barely snow plough and he really did bring us all on, so from that perspective I think he did a really good job.

I didnt know he was the main man for the wig wam things but I guess he cant do the instructing all year round. Were off to try Maria Alm after reading the advice in this forum it seems to lend itself to the intermediate skier. Weve also been on a summer holiday to Zell Am See and the chance to stay near there very much appealed to my Wife. Im going to return to Medassier outside of the holidays when its quiet. Were going to Maria Alm at half term (2014) which isnt ideal.
