Congratulations Ice Ghost :!:

Learning is such fun when the results are as rewarding as your accomplishment is here. Way to go   And the winter is young :!:

Jan,

My understanding is that this debate will only serve to "educate" each other as to our preferences in the sport of skiing. We will learn of what differences in expectations and goals we have when we head out to a ski hill. No doubt there must be some cultural differences but then the debate may end up showing us that there is more of a difference in our goals and expectations as related to age brackets rather than cultures. We all obviously have a great interest in skiing or we wouldn't be reading these pages.

Dave - aka Mr. Admin;

It was with interest I followed the directions you gave Gareth to locate ski related web cams. This path took me to check out the Canadian sites listed - of course.

The list includes a ski center called Ben Eoin which the map locates in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. (Right where I understand it to be - but I've never been there.) Also listed is Wentworth which the map shows as near Montreal, Quebec. This may be so but there is a SkiWentworth in Nova Scotia too. This is its site with loads of info: http://www.skiwentworth.ca/ It is a family friendly hill with a 815 ft. vertical elevation and 20 trails.

The Nova Scotia hill at which I ski most often is Ski Martock and this link will get you there: http://www.martock.com/index.php Martock's elevation is 6oo ft but is only about 45 minutes from the most polulated area of the province whereas Wentworth is about 90 minutes. The Nova Scotia season typically runs from mid or late December until late March.

I offer these comments as the page you have on which you have listed "Wentworth" asks anyone who has skied there to tell you a bit about the place. Wentwoorth has some really nice runs as does Martock. Wentworth is steeper but Martock is closer to home. The times I have skied at Wentworth have been really worth the drive and conditions have been good. Skiing at Martock is the Saturday morning standard practice for the winter months - nothing (except the weather or a death in the family) gets in the way of a Saturday ski "trip" to Martock. Some really nice night skiing is available at Martock as well.

I hope this may be of value.

Snow is coming your way!

Yippeee :!:

And the best of the forecast is that the bulk of the snow will land near the ski hills. Halifax will see little snow and some rain over night to clear the streets.

And, no slight to Dave, but he wouldn't be able to "invent" a cyberspace Pavel :!:  Nothing like the real thing... eh? Absolutely truly unique - in only the good way :!:

Not only is the chair lift a "good" location to meet someone but it can be a very interesting time if the "chair mates" are willing to share - or talk.

Pavel you revealed recently that you taught university. This may be a good place to share your story of the girl on the lift that later appeared in your class. It shows how valuable even lift chair time can be if used wisely - watching out for "mates" or simply sharing a common interest.

I'll be watching the developments Pavel.

We haven't heard from Dean and where on this ball we call earth is Trencher located?

It looks like the winter is beginning in NS now. The temperatures have been cold and the hills are making snow :!: There is a large storm on the way for tonight - so if the rain stays away we may just see a hill or two open by the weekend. Here's hoping, oh and by the way - "God save the Queen" :!:

Oh Pavel...

This is a good one :!:

But it may start another world war - but being the kind people true skiers really are - it would be only a war of words.

YHZ is about a 20 minute drive and if there was a corporate jet there to meet I'm sure I could make it in 10. The concodre passed over head one day and I almost beat it to the airport. -- It took off after dark and the wait was worth he sight. (Both concordes had landed in Halifax a number of times - now I waiting for a NASA shuttle's emergency landing as Halifax is designated as an alternative landing site if required. That would be neat :!:)

But it seems I may bring out the shotgun from storage - maybe it has grown to be a canon now.

This could be interesting but certainly educational. My skiing has been limited to Nova Scotia and one trip to MSA in Quebec. All seemed to get along well but as my memory kicks in I remember asking a girl on the chair at Martock (NS) from what part of Austrailia she came. I was able to determine her accent was Austrailian - not British.

Our "gripes" of differences are not international but rather inter-provincial. For example: "True North", the yacht built as Canada's Americas' Cup Yacht Race entry years ago was built in Nova Sciotia (about 30 minutes from my door) and then was crewed by "upper" Canada sailors. Canada lost --- why ?? because the crew only thought they knew how to sail a superior craft. The money behind the project was not from NS so superior sailors from the yacht's home were not given the chance to win the cup. Now "True North" is giving visitors to the Caribbean a chance at experiencing the thrill of sailing an Americans' Cup class yacht

Just call me - "off topic" Mike
