Magic Numbers all skiers should know!

[Yes we change and hopefully for ther better.

My dancing only began after I was married... my mother wouldn't know me now!

My wife's cousin lived in Weymouth for a time. Is there an area called St George's Hill in Weymouth or is that in Glouster? We visited in '94 by taking the Bakerloo line to Waterloo and a train past Wimbledon to their place. Last name was Hepher.

More numbers from Mike:

1 Side bevel in degrees

0 Base bevel in degrees

23-13-445 A number like my phnoe number in case of emergency

10 number of minutes for the chair lift to get to the top

51 the number of runs I've accomplished in one day - so far !

ellistine wrote:Pavel, oh Pavel.

I'm trying to think less about skiing over the summer months not more!

Are we talking about numbers relating to the skis themselves or skiing in general?

You know, Ellistine, Pavel is loving this !!!

I saw you were on line so thought I would ask if you ever have gone to the Blackpool Dance Festival? I think it takes place next week. My wife and I and some friends were there in 1994. And of course toured the Tower Ballroom and the tower itself. Also toured the Lake District and spent a week in London. We had a great time!

Me too ! The bigger the box the better sometimes.

But with this note I'll take another crack at it:

#1 ... -5C meaning the most comfortable skiing temperature for me

#2 ... 0knts. meaning no wind and therefore no wind chill

#3 ... 10 pm meaning the time the ski hill (Martock) closes for the day. You need to know when to leave

#4.... 20 cms meaning snow coverage .. knowing the ground and snow coverage you're skiing may prevent costly ski damage and therefore save you money - if you know where the coverage is too thin.

#5 ... 8:30am meaning the time when the sun position may cause flat light and difficult ski conditions - dependant on the particular hill of couses. Knowing what to expect may help make the skiing safer --OKAY this one is a reach...

ellistine wrote:Time for a new approach!

As a Brit, time spent amongst the skiing fraternity is extremely limited. In fact I have only ever had a grand total of 31 days of skiing on snow without a roof on it.

Because of this, help is very often needed to learn the finer details of this magical sport.

Pavel - I need Help

From a fellow Commonwealther - what ever that's supposed to mean.

Ahhh the plea for another hint !!! Pavel has seen this before too!

Actually I could use one of those as well.

But this time I haven't YET reverted to the internet for help. Ellistine, there was one quizz that I thought all I needed to do was search the net. HA ! That didn't help at all. Can you see what I mean? Your answers look perfect and my attempt at another approach didn't come close either. So where do we go from here???

Hang in there, these Mutix skis are something else and at 165 should turn like a hot knife in soft butter!

Ellistine ... you are learning all about the Pavel Springtime Quiz !!! You are also learning how Pavel gets his jollies during the off season (aka the non snowy part of the ski season...). He lives quite a distance from me but if I llisten closely I can hear him laughing with joy at our frustration... (but only in a good way - of course).

Part of the quizz is keeping us confused; we each have given some careful thought and made our best stabs but we don't know how close nor how far off the mark we are. And then Pavel - the Quizmaster dangles those great Rossignol skis at us just to keep us going. He's a person with a ture knowledge of mankind!!

I have to put on one of our ballroom dance events tonight so I'll be thinking about numbers as I play disc #16 - track 2 ... This happens to be the Boyzone tune - "No Matter What" which we play as a rumba.

Isn't this great fun !!!

Ellistine;

I can see exactly what Pavel meant when he said you art like I was a few years ago. The sleepless nights during the Pavel Springtime Quizz period, the frustratioin in puzzlement of what he is after, the obvious answers which don't seem to be correct, and above all your justification and explaination of the answers in hopes that Pavel will see the wisdom in the answer and amend his own answer to bring acceptance of yours. Been there - done that!!! Oh ... what fun !!!

One reply I offered for a quizz question even brought Pavel's wife to his computer room at home ... to see what was so funny. I think your reply may have done the same today.

I too have given more thought to the answers for the 2007 Quizz. It has been so long since I've studied statistical probabilty and Gaussian distributions that it would take deeper thought than I could muster to delve into the deep hint burried there. But the hint that tells me much is that of not letting someone on the lift without knowledge of these numbers. Therefore along with all the obvious answers of ski costs and specifications there are 10 numbers which are very important as issued by the Canadian Ski Patrol and of these 10 numbers I find it difficult to single out the most important 5. These of course the 10 points of the Alpine Code of Responsibility. So the gun is loaded and my finger on the trigger.

BANG !

By being mindful and following these code items we will save a lot of money and enjoy skiing even more. We will be safe and able to return for another day of the great activity of skiing.

Therefore....

#1. Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people and objects. (money saved !)

#2 People ahead of you have the right away - its your responsibility to avoid them (In broad terms #1 says the same thing.)

#3 You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or where not visible from above. (more money saved and safe too.)

#4 Whenever starting downhill or merginging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. (Safe and wise actions always save money!)

#5 If involved in (or whitness) a collision - stay put and speak with Ski Patrol.

#6 Always use proper devices to prevent runaway equipment. (Now tell me that doesn't save money and potentially other accidents.)

#7 Observe posted signs and warnings.

#8 Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. (There is good reasoning here but where's the fun in that?)

#9 You must not use lifts of terrain if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs. (Just like driving or operating machinery - it just isn't a good idea...)

#10. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load and ride, and unload safely.

So of these 10 numbers, I think #'s 1, 3, 4, 6 and 9 are the 5 most important. The other 5 are hopefully common sense and common courtesy which society should expect from others. These are no doubt important but to meet what I think is Pavel's intent here the ones I mentioned seem more fitting to me. .... as I sprial out into space !!!

ellistine wrote:I suppose If I planned to return for a second week to the same same ski area, perhaps an anual pass would be worth considering.

Thanks.

Absolutely !!! And this is the time of year for getting the best deals... so if you are planning to be anywhere where they offer season passes it might be really worth looking into it. Now, do you see why a Pavel Quizz is so exciting? We have brought about the thoughts of planning a ski trip, just because we were thinking of answers for his great Rossi skis!!! The, aaaaaa ... snowball effect !!

Ellistine,

If not for the season pass scheme skiing here could become very expensive.

At a small hill such as Martock or Wentworth (both within an easy drive from Halifax, NS) the daily lift ticket (excluding taxes) might be in the area of $30 CDN / day. Martock's season pass is selling for $109.95 CDN before the end of June when it increases a bit. Wentworth is a bit more expensive but still a saving.

If you are at all considering a winter vacation to this part of the world and plan to ski a week, then it might save you a few dollars to look into purchasing a season pass to the hill you may plan to ski.... Most resorts and smaller hills offer season passes. Some serve many hills for the one pass.

And when Pavel suggested the number which is the most important on his list would save you money --- well, the savings of the season pass sprung to mind! The skiing experience costs, just like the home purchase, can be made up of many items. The skis are obvious but if we don't have a place to use them they become a really nice conversation piece.

Last winter I had only 15 days (22 the previous year) and at the daily rate it would have cost about $450 but with last year's pass (selling at $99.) there was a saving that covered the even more than the cost of gasloline to get to the hill ! My cost / run rounded out at about $.58. Savings just help make the ski experience even more fun !!!
