Hi Gareth & souldrive,
It looks like Jan is going to take us on in his "school of spinning" :!:  Thanks Jan :!: :!: Spinning is something that looks so easy until you try it. It looks like a person who can spin has a superb sense of balance and where to apply pressure - and when to apply it. Your analysis of why I can't get any farther than the first 180 is about 100% accurate. I speak for all interested in acquiring the technique, I'm sure, when I say I'm looking forward to step by step video you suggested posting. What I do now is hockey stop (left foot downhill) and drift around to travelling backwarks in a slight wedge. Like the others said, I can't keep the revolution going - and just glide to a hault. I tried this morning pressuring the heels as the wedge began but it didn't make any difference. I'll bet I'm looking down too. So next time out I'll be working with your instructions and memory of the pending video. I always have hope in my heart and if it helps, I'll put Elan in my soul but it'll be Atomics (SX9) on my feet :!: :D I have a good handle on side slipping so I expect from what you say of watching the edges spinning will be helped by this side slip edging "confidence". I appreciate your reply Jan and look forward to spinning not only on figure skates - and hopefully better on the skis. So like Gaerth, I feel we need twin tips to execute this correctly. Say it's not so !!! He's got us under his wing Gaerth and souldrive :!: Thanks Jan, Mike  |

Brian, I asked Pavel the same question once (he won't let me forget it) and it was his signal to step in and help me. I had even used "paro-wax" - a parifin wax for sealing preservatives (jams, pickles etc) because the package said it was good for skis. It probably did no harm; but just watch and Pavel will set us straight. But scented bases would be nice :!: The faster we went the stronger the scent :!: Mike  |

Now as you can see from the avatar, some may consider me an "old dog". So then I would like some of you more skilled skiers to teach me a new trick.
Specifically: spinning :!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFihpicUZBI As in this U-Tube video: how is it done? Where are the pressures? Are twin tip skis a must for this trick? I can easily get turned around backwards but can't seem to continue the motion. And if this has been discussed before - please direct me towards the thread. :D Thanks, Mike  |

I certainly don't want to de-rail discussion on Tremblant over Beaver Tails or Poutine (and I'm glad that you liked the snack Chris).... but ..... Pavel I must be misunderstanding what poutine is. I thought it consisted of french fried potatoes covered cheese and all that buried in gravey. I had always heard it referred to as "a heart attack on a plate"! Am I incorrect in this thinking? When we go skiing Saturday mornings, I may have only a cup of coffee until lunch time or later. If planning a long solo day I have taken a small package of carotts or the like for chair ride times - in case hunger arises. The season is so short I don't want to waste time eating - that's what the summers are for!! :!: Also when summertime strolling the Halifax waterfront - just like when walking along the Quebec City board walk - there's nothing like a sticky Beaver Tail from the nearby kiosks. Yummy + :!:
Pavel, when is the big dealers trade show at Tremblant this year? Is any aspect of it open to the public? If it takes place the third week of March would Michele be granted entrance to see next years goodies? Mike  |

But the "Beaver Tails" are sooooo gooood Pavel :!:
Even Martock has them as does Wentworth this year. Deep fried bread dough loaded with cinnamon, sugar and cooked gooey apple slices with choices of lots of other fattening tasty things too. Michele, you've got to at least try them . I think they are a Canadian thing eh? But not quite sure about that. Soooo goood that you don't really care how unhealthy a choice they may be. Take a look: http://www.beavertailsinc.com/index.php Have a great trip :!: Mike  |

It's a lot colder there today than in Nova Scotia.
Edmonton is at -18C, Calgary at -7C and Halifax going to +10 today. Spring skiing in the east!! I'd be watching for your plane to fly over Ross but we are so thick in the fog that I can't see across the street. Ross, if you're going to Sunshine we (I) will look for you here - be sure to wave. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/index.php?product=weather_cams&pagecontent=weather_cams&camregion=canada&camera=CMAB0007 Have a good trip! Mike ) |

I'll keep my eyes open at Martock for Jan ... maybe he's hiding over here :!: Mike  |

Ross,
My first trip through Heathrow was in 1994 and I had thought they had landed in Saudi Arabia then in 1997 it looked like the place had been taken over by Iraq. It was "Minding the Gap" in the subway in London which was an adventure. The 1997 trip included a visit to Belfast where one Saturday morning we were treated to a lovely Orangeman's parade. I missed the trip our travelling companions made in 2001 to the UK but they made a visit to Edinburgh and the tattoo. Travelling can open our minds to just how small a world we live in! I wish my trips were to ski hills now that I've found that part of life. You are well aware of how cold it can get here Ross so bring warm clothing and pick up some of those chemical hand warmers at the Dollar Stores. As I write this, Nova Scotia is going through a -15C spot of weather but next week is supposed to stay around +8 :!: Banff should be colder. I for one will be watching for your reports on how your time is going. God bless the internet :!:  Mike :-) |
