Skiing after a stroke
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 7 Replies
I am really interested to hear your views on this subject. I have not had a stroke but have MS and weakness down my right side so I have to adapt my skiing to accomodate this. Yes it is frustrating, not to be able to do what was easy in the past. But I can still ski. Yeay! This year I took private lessons which suited me much better. When it was suggested I make my turns on one leg, I could say no as I would have fallen over! And I didn't have to explain or be embarrassed in a group situation. I want to ski again next year so any comments gratefully received!

Hi Dan. I have done both private and group lessons and I would definitely recommend group lessons for a beginner in my opinion. As you know the basics you will progress quickly, but when I learnt in a group, by day two I was getting up the mountain. It is amazing how quickly you can actually ski. Fatigue is the hardest thing, especially getting up after falling down. I did a lot of that! Still do actually! You could always have a private lesson on your last day and hopefully by then you will be skiing like a pro! Enjoy your holiday!

I just hope that's not the same instructor that told about the expected snowfall.

It was! And I'll believe anything!

Sued & Zell Belle as much as I would like to take you both with me I have a strong feeling that the attraction is to have a weeks skiing in Zell & not me personally, so on that assumption you will both have to stay at home & sulk.

Sorry but that's life. :(

Oh & Sued the helmet wearing ploy was the last straw.

The helmet bit is rude? I never knew! Best I not come with you as I would only show you up on the slopes with my skiing expertise. Hope you all have a lovely holiday!

I have been to Zell 4 times now and must admit this year was not the best snow. But it was still great it just made sense to start and finish earlier than I was used to. My friend went to Zell 4 year's ago, when the snow barely came at all and said the snow up there was still great. In fact, I hold her solely resposibly as she loved Zell and urged me to visit. My bank balance would have been much improved if I hadn't!

If your instructor is right & I also enjoy myself will that put salt on the wound, nah I wouldn't do that to you.

Yeah but the instructor was laughing and his nose was growing. Weird! Seriously all the slopes at Zell have snow cannons so you won't have a problem. I have skiied in deep snow and found it tough going, you don't need a lot of snow for it to be good! p.s. can I come in your suitcase?

You're welcome to reside in my suitcase, as long as you're not wearing a lid. :D

Won't wear a lid but please can I wear my helmet? My husband says I am a liability- I think it was the slopes he was referring to!!!

I have only ever skiied in Austria and had no real problems. Kids in Skischule do sometimes push in but the instructors do have to try and keep together. I hate it when people push in but I have had to train my children not to be too British (apologies if that is a bit racist), but my younger one nearly got suffocated at Disneyland Paris by an adult! That said there is a difference between being assertive and being aggressive. Failing that you could always use your ski pole- accidently of course
