Courmayeur - only downside is there is a 5 minute walk to the godola but you can leave your ski's and boots in the lockers at the top.
There's enough skiing for 4 days but not for a week. Nice town, relatively short transfer. Sestriere is part of a much bigger area but the transfer is longer & it's not something you'll really make full use of in 4 days. |

For simplicity go to Bourg St M. then all you have to do is get n the funicular (or whatever it's called) & it takes you up into Arc 1600.
It's cheaper to stay in Bourg but the snow's in Arc. There are also busses that take you to the other Arcs & La Plagne. |

Either your boots aren't long enough or they are long enough but too loose so your toe slides down and hits the end of the boots.

A good helmet should dissipate the energy of the impact and reduce the rate of decelleration of the skull and with it the impact of the brain hitting the skull. It won't prevent all fatalities in the same way seat belts don't stop all decelleration fatalities in car crashes. However they are likely to push the boundaries of differing grades of inury further up the impact scale. An impact that might have caused a sore head may become nothing, a bout of concussion a sore head, a mild brain injury becomes concussion, major brain injury becomes mild, death becomes a major brain injury. Some levels of impact will always be fatal with or without a helmet - it's the ones below that we have to consider. Is it likely to be measurable?- not easy to quantify the severity of head injuries at different impact speeds as human trials wouldn't get past the ethic comnittee and animal trials would be hard to support and crash test dummies just tell you about the physics. It's down to personal choice for adults. For insurers it's down to the actuaries. You pays your money |

If you are heading to Spain you could go to Andorra which would be a good place to learn to ski and not too expensive. Soldeu or El Tarter would be my suggestions.
If you are going too Austria why not ski there? It is, in the main less expensive than the French or Swiss resorts. |

I remember going to Le Mans one year - apparently the local gendarmes breathalised nearly a thousand drivers - they had about 20 positive breath test - all but one were locals!
Drink driving is more common in France and as I recall has two levels - low level a fine, and the higher level a ban like we do. Quite how having a breathaliser in the car will help I don't know - perhaps one in the bar and one at home might be better because it's probably too late by the time you're in the car! |

Coping without an ACL isn't as uncommon as you think - an ACL does more (functionally) in some peoples' knees than others.
I have it on good authority that Rory Underwood played on Tigers & England's wing with ruptured ACLs. Granted repairs are much more commonplace these days so perhaps he would have had them done had he been born 15 years later. The key thing is that the rehab exercise doesn't end when you've recovered from the op. ACLs rupture for a number of reasons - simple high impact being one of them but for most people it's a combination of trauma and knee structure and quality of the ligament. People who rupture 1 are more likely to do the other or rupture the repair than the average person. The key thing is to make sure your knees are fit and strong for skiing and there is good evidence that wearing a brace, such as the one above (not just a neoprene support) reduces the risk of repeat injuries. |
