2 more sleeps! Or possibly just the 1 as I might be too excited to sleep tomorrow night. Leaving around 5am to 'beat the traffic'.

I've become obsessed with the weather forecasts over the last week, it's amazing how often the long range forecast changes. Literally by the hour every day, I checked this morning and it was doom and gloom, a few hours later and it's all sunshine and roses.

I think I will just have to stick my head out the window every morning, more reliable.

And the plane will still be flying whether you're on it or not.

I have tried to do my bit, and I think I do enough as an individual with recycling etc. It's the bigwigs that need to do something to stop global warming, not just the individual.

However, as normal we have digressed. I get regular emails from Mountain Sun as they do 'out of the ordinary' dates (3/7/9 days) and seem to be reasonable in cost if you can get a cheap flight or chose to drive.

I'd love to go for a 3 day equipment test, and I may well do, but will see how the pennies are doing nearer the time :D

You can only take sensible precautions and if you get it, you get it. But the biggest problem is people who think they have it will just not isolate themselves for a few days. They go into surgery,s, chemists and shops. If only they would stay away for a few days it would not spread so much. In my line of work its important we keep going as we supply so many other essential services. In China they are probably going a bit overboard, but they had to really as they got slated for the way they dealt with Bird flu, they are having to be more cautious. Tamiflu will only help you if you actually have symptoms. At the moment any one person in this country is allowed ONE course of tamiflu, no more so you need to use your ONE course wisely. Hope your Son is okay Tony.

If this country had done what China are doing in the first place then we wouldn't all be so paranoid about getting it and it probably wouldn't have spread like wild-fire. They were merrily letting people into the country, from Mexico and no-one seemed to care.

Is the FIL happy to fly at 30,000 ft, but unhappy to sit on a chairlift at 30 ft?

FIL has no probs with flying at all and is happy going up the mast on his yacht. But, I've been in a gondola with him and the fear is intense. I think a lot of the problem is worrying about the lift getting stuck and having to be rescued. If the lift stops he really gets worried and the fear becomes overwhelming. Even getting the train for the first time from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg was a huge challenge. Familiarity does help though. We went to Grindelwald for the second time in January and because he'd been on the gondola / train before he was fine. He even went on the gondola from Mannlichen down to Wengen which has a huge sheer drop. And then when he went on a small 4 person bubble barely 40ft off the ground he was in pieces.
It's a really difficult situation for him as he loves the snow, skiing, walking etc.

So would he be fine after just one trip in the gondola or would it take a week to get used to it? I can't imagine having the kind of fear everyone is talking about, I have absolutely no problem with heights/flying and can't comprehend being scared on a chairlift, but it's clearly a big problem for him. Have you discussed the Mayrhofen lifts with him?

5 more sleeps! Weather not looking great, but as I will be spending a fair amount of time in the sea it won't actually matter :D

Tony has pretty much covered it all really. As well as being scarily high off the ground, the Penken also does a bit of a 'wobble' half way up when it goes round a corner which can be very scary first time (or very amusing from then on).

There is a train going elsewhere from Mayrhofen to other resorts along the valley but there is more than enough skiing on the Penken and the Ahorn, plus there's the bus going up to the glacier.

I think once they get over the initial lift up the mountain they will be fine, although if they don't like chairs then maybe not.

Is it Austria in particular you wanted to ski in? Many Tony could enlighten you about St Anton.
I still get lost using a sat-nav
