Face piste at Val D'isere - how difficult?
Started by User in France, 25 Replies
No, it was the season before. I was there for the first week of Feb 08. It was billed as being the test for the 2009 World Championships.

La Face was off limits for most of the week, but was finally opened up on Wednesday if my memory is correct. I was staying less than 30 yards from the Banana Bar, so guess where we did most of our Apres  Much shorter crawl than Dicks.

These pictures don't really do it justice, but I was there in 2008 when the Circus came to town, hence the perfect pisting on La Face. They may give you an idea of what to expect.

This first two pics are the chair which takes you up halfway, you can then ski across if you wish and get another chair to the top, or you can go right up in the gondola in one hit.

This one shows the end of the run looking over the Banana Bar (bottom right), you can see the incline better on this pic.

Finally, these two are of La Face as you go up in the gondola

Skiing Technique Question

yan_pap wrote:Hello everybody and Happy New Year!

Just a quick question...

Could someone tell me how the skiing technique that the skier has both the legs really close to each other and allows him to go downhill really fast is called?

I know I am probably very vague. the body posture does resemble that of mogul skiing but they do it without the bumps...

Many Thanks

Hello yan_pap, welcome to the forum.

Do you mean that they go downhill in a straight line, or making short quick turns?

 But if you are all wearing big red carnations to identify each other, your friends might get suspicious
The Ski Helmet Debate
Started by Admin in Ski Hardware, 491 Replies, discussing Tignes and Val Thorens
I have just seen an article on the Good Ski Guide site, which I think is a bit of an eyeopener. It is not about helmets, but about why the authors feel there are a growing number of accidents whilst in an Alpine environment.

To quote the headline
"After skiing together as a team for more than 50 years Good Ski Guide writers and resort Editors chalked up a hideous First last season - All six team members were hit by other slope users."

The Article is here Good Ski Guide Safety Feature

I appreciate that many collisions result in general body damage, but this is not very likely to be life threatening. It is the head damage which can either kill or affect people for life. I have just read in the printed version of the Good Ski Guide that the Swiss have an annual 70,000 snowsport accidents (yes that was seventy thousand), 10% of which are head injuries. That makes 7000 banged heads a year just in Switzerland. The Swiss have assigned a budget of 2.5 million Francs to run a campaign to try to reduce this.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of those figures, but they are certainly higher than I would have thought.

As stated by many already, I am not going to try and force those who do not want to wear a helmet to do so, it is their own choice. However, if any information which is posted here helps someone to change their mind, or become aware of some of the increasing dangers, then that has to be a good thing.

Lovely picture Tino, is that Kitzbuhel?

Anyway, a very Happy New Year to everyone. I hope we all get the snow we wish for and the lift queues to be short ones, especially the far queues
Ski Boots suitable for a high instep
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 14 Replies
Hi terrible. I think you may find that modern boots have changed quite a lot.

My brother has high insteps, and has been fitted perfectly well with a pair of Head boots. He finally took my advice and saw someone who fitted them properly, and the seem to have done an excellent job. His feet have never been so happy since he was sorted.
