I totally agree... skiing with young children is always a compromise & their needs are very different from adult beginner needs. Adults in Les Gets are only allowed to ski in the Grand Cry area if accompanied by a child, which is great for building confidence in nervous little ones. A huge varied ski area with lively apres ski certainly wouldn't be my main priorities if my needs were the same as Dobby's. Find somewhere where the children will be happy & the parents should be happy too ) |

I've always used Nevada Sports - found them to be very helpful & friendly. We used to leave all our kit there overnight with our boots on the drying/heating racks. http://www.nevada-lesgets.com
Have a great time! |

Hi - I was going to recommend Les Gets - but I've already done that in one of your earlier posts.
We started skiing there with friends when all our children were little & we have some great memories of happy childen enjoying all the child-friendly things Les Gets has to offer. There is a real Christmassy feel to the village & our children used to enjoy a ride on the free petit train which travels around all day. We used to go mid January, & apart from the 2007 season which was poor everywhere, we've had fantastic conditions. Also, it's only just over 1 hour from Geneva which should suit you. The area around Les Chavannes has plenty for beginners & children, including the Grand Cry Territory & The Mappy's Area (see http://www.lesgets.com/en/accueil/index.html for more details). From here it would be easy for one parent & your older child to go further afield, but quickly return so the parents can swap over. If you fancy France, I think it would be a great choice. BASS are an excellent ski school & our son loved his lessons with them. Good look with your choice! |

Very lucky you - I have lots of happy memories from Les Gets & would happily go back!
For a quick blast out from the town, Tulipe from the top of Le Ranfoilly is a nice run! I've spent hours on here building up my red run confidence!
:-) :D  Where will you be living? |

Have you looked at Les Gets - it's a lovely village for families? We've used BASS (British Alpine Ski School) on quite a few occasions & been very happy with them.

Hi - we were in Samoens in January 2008 & had a great time. It was pretty quiet so I can't comment on half term skiing. We flew to Geneva then got a mini bus transfer to our apartment. As the area was new to us, there was plenty to do from our base & we didn't feel we needed a car.
We did get stuck in Morillon one afternoon when the links back to Samoens were closed due to strong winds, so that's something to be aware of. Extra buses were laid on & we got home eventually, but I imagine that this could be a bit chaotic at busy periods. We were also able to do the Cascades run to Sixt, although it was closed for most of the time. There are a couple of uphill sections, but the effort was worth it as the scenery was fantastic. Make sure you time it right to get the bus back so you don't get stranded in Sixt. We didn't eat out but did have a few excellent take away pizzas from La Tartinerie, the pizzeria in the main town square. Also, there are a couple of excellent bakeries in the town especially the Boulangerie Tiffanie – you can't miss them as you wander around. Samoens is a lovely town & we would happily go back there. If you want to see my photos they are at:- http://picasaweb.google.com/Jimandsal/SamoensWebAlbum# Hope you have a great time! |
