Hi - we usually stay in St. Gervais and ski to Megeve from there. Last year we drove to Praz sur Arly and skied to Notre-Dame de Bellecombe from there. Combloux, Les Contamines and Les Houches are also quite easy to get to. It's a good base if you don't mind doing a bit of driving. My only advice would be to get up in good time and get to your destination car park by 9ish before it gets too busy (unless it's low season). Lots of places in that area have eating places on the slopes 'Hors Sac' where you are welcome to sit inside to eat your own picnic - ideal if you're on a budget and the weather isn't good enough to sit outside. We're going back this Christmas and New Year ..... might even bump into Mr W -)

Yes - I did enjoy it thanks  That is until the x-ray - I do work with broken bones but am very squeamish about seeing them on x-rays. Hope you're mended

Hi Jadavi
I haven't stayed in Megeve itself, but have stayed in St. Gervais quite a few times and have frequently skied on the Megeve side of the valley. Personally, I love the area and you can quite easily reach St Gervais, Megeve, Combloux, La Giettaz and St.Nicholas de Veroce from any of these bases. If you have a car, you have lots more posibilities, including Les Contamines. This year we explored further afield and took the Tramway du Mont Blanc (just for the experience) to Les Houches, drove just beyond Megeve to Praz sur Arly and Notre Dame de Bellecombe and went through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Cormayeur - all very easy. We usually go over Christmas and New Year and it's still perfectly possible to have quiet slopes and no queues. I consider myself to be a very budget conscious intermediate skier. We usually go self-catering and like many others, we take advantage of the many 'Hors Sac' indoor picnic areas if the weather isn't suitable to sit outside for a picnic lunch. The views of Mont Blanc are stunning, so we sit out whenever possible. If the area is considered to be expensive, it doesn't affect me -) It's beautiful, easy to get to and offers plenty of variety, both when skiing or in the evenings. I don't care if people are 'posh' or not. I care more if they are obnoxious or rude and let's face it, you meet posh, obnoxious and rude in all walks of life and in most ski resorts. Last year I stood next to a very good looking young man on an escalator up to a telecabine in Megeve. He wore an immaculate long black leather jacket and had a pair of silver/chrome skis - probably Bogner or something (a tad too expensive for me). We decided he was a Russian oligarch, but that my Dare2b jacket and hire skis were far more practical for the conditions :D Here is a link to my photo page on snow-forecast.com which gives you an idea of the area, although I haven't uploaded any of Megeve itself:- http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/SaintGervaisMontBlanc/photos/6266 I guess it depends on what you are looking for from your skiing holiday, but I'd certainly recommend the area, and if you find Megeve itself too expensive, there are plenty of cheaper options very close by. |

Sorry but I couldn't get beyond Q6
6. How did you book your holiday? Physical Travel Agent Travel Agent website Comparison site Other (please specify) I couldn't tick the 'other' box so it wouldn't let me proceed to the next page, even though I did specify what 'other' was. |

Hi Olla
We booked through Snowbrainer in December & picked up our brand new (Elan Amphibio) skis from Sport 2000 in St Gervais just before Christmas - no problems at all. We did the same last year too. 9 days hire for Black/Gold skis was 87.36 euros and boots for my son were 30.24 euros. In the past I've also used Skiset and Snowrental and as Bandit says, these are online agents & not shops. If you're concerned, contact the shop that your chosen online agent is acting for, & verify that they do deal with them. Hiring directly from the shops themselves is much more expensive in my experience. |
