Sorry Ripperup - I've not been to LDA & sadly I'm not going. I went to Les Gets for 2 weeks mid Jan when the ski area was closed due to lack of snow....anyway that's another story!
I only looked out of interest because I like looking at different resorts and different snow reports. I'm trying to find something more useful to do with my time ....... perhaps I should tackle my ironing pile :( (Have you looked at www.metcheck.com?). |

I've not been to Les Deux Alpes, but if you go to the Ski Club of Great Britain website, they give comprehensive reports on individual resorts on a daily basis.
As I have this problem which means I can't stop looking at snow forecasts, I've looked for you. It says that piste conditions are excellent and that 10cm of snow is forecast over the next 7 days. Sounds pretty good to me! :) Obviously, there is tons of good stuff on this website too, but I expect you already know that!! |

Pete - I'd wait and see what happens with the snow. On-line lift pass sales are currently suspended until 9th February anyway (due to conditions). I was in Les Gets for 2 weeks from 14th January, which included the period of time when it was shut. Until it shut, Sagets decided the rate for lift passes on a daily basis :(
We went to Avoriaz every day & bought passes there. A PDS pass would have only been useful on my last day when skiing beyond Avoriaz was possible. If you still haven't done all there is to do in Les Gets & Morzine, then a local pass will keep you occupied for a week, particularly if you are skiing with a mixed ability or family group and the snow is good. If the snow isn't good, you may wish to go to Avoriaz (own transport or bus) & buy a pass for there. I'd only get a PDS pass if the snow is good & you intend to make the most of it & get up early & get to Avoriaz & beyond. Skiing to Morzine, getting across town & up to Avoriaz all takes time. That's OK if you don't have to stop for little ones or slower skiers. If you do, then I'd get to the Ardent car park first thing in the morning (20 mins drive from Les Gets) & up to Avoriaz that way. To be honest, Chatel is a better base for giving you access to the PDS. We stayed there in Jan last year & had fantastic conditions & made full use of a PDS pass. The previous year, we had fantastic conditions in Les Gets & never felt the need to go beyond the local area. Decisions, decisions....the choice is yours! The Les Gets lift pass office is open every day from 8.30am - 5.00pm if you leave it until you get there. It's hard not to get stressed when you've worked hard, saved hard & booked the holiday you've looked forward to for months. I didn't eat or sleep for a week before I went because of the rapidly deteriorating conditions - & we still had an excellent holiday & skied on all but one day (when it poured with rain). The forecasts for February are certainly looking more promising so I hope you have a fab time. I'll be very jealous when it starts to dump with snow :? Is there a medical term for people who spend hours fruitlessly searching the web for forecasts which predict snow? If such an illness exists - then I've got it ..... but I'm sure I'm not the only one!!! :-) |

I?ve just come back from a 2 week stay in Les Gets. Sadly we weren?t able to ski there at all as the ski area only re-opened just before we left. However, all was not lost as free busses were laid on to transport us to the Ardent cable car up to Avoriaz. We had lessons booked with BASS (excellent as ever) and they re-located to Avoriaz.
To ensure we were there on time we booked a mini bus to drop us off & collect us for the first week with Alp-Line (also excellent as ever) which made life much easier ? especially with 3 children! The skiing in Avoriaz was fine ? more challenging than usual due to there being less snow and more people. However, this improved greatly following the snow last week. We used the free bus for our second week ? which was sometimes fine and sometimes a total nightmare with people surging and pushing to get on it. There were sometimes long queues in the mornings to buy lift passes at the Ardent cable car ? 45 minutes one day. We started to buy them at the end of the day for the following day to save time. I look at various weather forecasts, including www.metcheck.com & no snow is indicated for the next week, although temperatures are set to fall towards next weekend. I went to Les Gets feeling very despondent about the snow situation, but had a far better holiday than expected. Go with an open mind & if more snow doesn?t come be prepared for busses & queues ? but enjoy it!! |

Can anyone offer any information on how the skiing is in Avoriaz at the moment? I'm heading off that way at the weekend - it doesn't appear as though any snow is forecast during next week. I hope it's not too busy as everyone skiing in the PDS heads off up there! :?

Sorry I can't comment on Megeve, but I can sympathise with that sinking feeling you get when you look at the webcams and weather forecasts.
We're off to Les Gets at the weekend & conditions don't look brilliant there either at the moment. We usually go to the Portes du Soleil at this time of year, & have been spoilt by fantastic conditions in the past. Hopefully someone who studies weather charts will be able to tell us that there is going to be a dramatic improvement next week!?! Let's be optimistic ..... at least being in the mountains is better than being at work. Hope it snows for you, for me & for everyone! :? |
