OK, just got home from work, so my thoughts on the matter.
We have been driving to Europe for the past 10 years. Frankly, out of a group of seven of us, there is only one person who would prefer to fly, and that is because she gets a little car sick, and even then she would only do so if the rest of us still took all her gear  We take around 8 hours from Calais to places like Tignes, and that is due to several stops now we are getting older. No, I really don't think it is cheaper, but we prefer the freedom it gives us on when we travel and what we take with us. We do have the advantage of taking a pair of 4x4 vehicles, so we really can load them up with gear and not worry too much about what the weather will bring. They are fitted with proper all terrain tyres, but even so we still have chains with us in case. This year we will be driving to Kitzbuhel, and I still think that will be under 10 hours from Calais. I drove to Dusseldorf this weekend in just over three hours, and that is over a third of the way there. Agree with earlier comments re France. Use the autoroutes and pay the tolls. I would look at getting the sensor for your car this year so you can pay later and just drive straight through the "fast" booths. See this thread for info.. http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/11089.page Just make sure your vehicle is fit for the journey, carry the required extras (hi vis jacket, triangle etc) and ensure you have plenty of anti freeze in your water. Also carry a container of pre made winter strength screen wash, as if it is damp, you will use a lot on the autoroute. |

A few seasons ago, when in Banff, I had the pleasure of getting on a chairlift next to a gentleman in his 90's and still Skiing regularly. He said the only problems he had were with his sight, so he now tends to stay slightly lower and Ski down runs where he can use the trees at the edge of the pistes as guides. He always lets the Ski Patrol know he is out, and they keep and eye out for him just to be safe.

Well, bummer about the original date, but great news about the changes.
I'm sure you know, but it is the sensible option, and unfortunately they are the one which often hurt the most. I really hope you are fully OK for March, and get to have the second best week of weather for the season (the best week being the beginning of Feb when I go!) |

Hi Clong, sorry to hear you have hurt yourself
OK, first off I am not a doctor, nor medically trained, so take this however you wish, I will not be offended  Last season whilst skiing in Wengen, one of our party managed to tear his ACL. He did see a doctor, who bandaged him up tightly after giving him some ice treatment, gave him some crutches and sent him back to the Hotel with the instructions to keep it raised and to be as still as he could. Basically he was told to spend the rest of the holiday reading and not walking (read that as hobbling) around. He was simply instructed to see someone when he got home for further treatment. They did make some arrangements for the flight (in terms of where he was to be seated), but nothing special. From the above example, I would suggest that as long as you are sensible, it should not be too much of an issue for you to hold on till you get home. But do consider your return trip. If you are flying, will you be able to sit in a standard seat? Not sure if the airline will allow someone who has impaired movement to sit by the emergency exit, so you may need to arrange somewhere else on the plane with leg room. As I say, I am not an expert, so someone may come along with different and better advice. In the meantime, I hope it does not hurt too badly, and I hope it does not turn out to be too serious. All the best. FQ. |
