Cairngorm Mountain above Aviemore in Scotland has finally decided to call it a day on their 2009-10 ski season after opening in June for the first time in 18 years.

Although final figures are yet to be published, it appears winter 2009-10 will have been one of the area's most successful for 20 years, with the lifts operating on around 150 days during the past eight months.

The only days the ski area was due to extreme weather, including too much snow in mid-winter, which took staff working flat out more than a week to dig out roads, lifts, restaurant and the funicular railways tracks. A local whisky distillery was so impressed by their efforts it rewarded each of them with a specially commissioned whisky.

Around 150,000 people have taken advantage of the great conditions and got out on the slopes.

Not according to the official website...

20th and 21st June - Midsummer Snowsports

We are celebrating midsummer by offering some snowsports on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st June. The skiing will be in a very limited area beyond the Ptarmigan Tow with uplift being provided by two temporary rope tows. Funicular only prices will apply (£9.75 adult/£6.15 junior/£8.45 senior & student). 2009-10 season tickets will also be valid. Equipment hire will not be available on the mountain but may be available from Glenmore Shop (tel. 01479 861253). There will be no snowsports on Saturday 19th June.

I really wish that the longest day, which is the 21st, would be recognised as Midsummer's Day...because then I would not feel the need to be a tiresome pedant every year

I do recall folks skiing Nevis Range in June before, many years ago. I wish I could justify the trip to Cairngorm, just for the hell of it 8)
