Welcome to J2ski :D You could try turning uphill slightly towards the end of the turn. To scrub off excess speed where that is not an option, you could also skid the tails.

What Bandit says!

sorry whats skidding the tails ?

I don't think we are actually talking about carving here. More like general speed control. But, what Bandit said still applies, plus keep making turns, and more of them.
because I'm so inclined .....

Someone's already said this but a private lesson is the best way. Mrs Smoothie and I went to Skiwelt last year, had a private lesson and our instructor took us down our first black run. You'll soon learn how to stop quick enough!

Would anyone have any tips on how to obtain both a modicum of speed yet be in total control without more or less coming to a standstill on turns when coming down a steep, narrow pitch?

For example in Livigno (although as Ian W has pertained to it doesn't have many true 'blacks') the very, very final descent into the Carasello 3000 gondola is a short, steep and often busy run where, apart from jumping into turns whilst traversing I find it difficult to keep any fluidity in my skiing as each turn totally kills off any of the speed, but saying that, and watching from the apres-ski bar it would appear a lot of people coming down do just that, but any little tips would be good, just in my own mind this start/not quite stop approach seems a little tame!
I decided to have a life change and be more spontaneous. Starting tomorrow.
