I've never had my hand luggage weighed. They usually ask to look at it though so I guess it's to check the size. I have actually mentioned to them that my ski boots are in my hand luggage and have never had a problem yet.

We book one ski bag on the plane but have a double ski bag so get to take two pairs of skis for the price of one and also fill the bag with shoes/clothing etc. as that doesn't get weighed either.

I thought boots weren't allowed as hand luggage. I once had to swap them from hand luggage to hold luggage in the check-in queue. Due to the check-in staff saying they weren't allowed in the cabin.

I'm going to check this with our airline this time. I always just packed them in my suitcase after that. It would make packing my suitcase a lot easier if I could take them on the plane.

I wear my ski jacket on the plane and my snow boots to save on luggage room. I've never seen anyone wearing salopettes though.

I considered doing this last year when I went to Alpe D'Huez, but I thought i'd better not JUST INCASE they checked it over.. and what d'ya know? They did, they weighed it and the boot bag and ski bag were to come to a max weight together of 20KG, they also put them through the scanner thingy machine - I had clothes in there right enough, but they couldn't say anything as it wasn't over 20KG, so I guess it also varies depending on your airline, but with ours (can't remember who we flew with - most likely ryanair) they had that 20KG limit and if you can fit 2 pairs of skis in the one bag and it all comes to 20KG or under, score for you!

This year (This Saturday infact :D) i'll just pack as I have done for the last two holidays, skis + boots in their bags with clothes stuffed in places to make up the weight and extra protection, then just stick the rest of clothes etc into a suitcase..
I guess you could say if the ski carriage went wrong/missing.. I'd be well and truely F'd.. But I put my trust into them as i've yet to experience any problems :)

that is a good idea about using the jacket as a pillow. and we are travelling in the afternoon and dont get to resort until about 6pm so it would make sense to take the jacket. Never thought about wearing the snow boots but that is also a good idea as they take up loads of room. hubby is more of the opinion less is more and would prefer to take as few cases as possible. we are also wanting to buy and take helmets but i think we would look like we had landed from the moon if we wore them lol (not that i would dare)! we are flying with crystal and i have looked at their terms and conditions and unfortunately we cant take the helmets as hand luggage. it doesnt say anything about boots as hand luggage but i know some tour operators dont allow it. we dont have our own skis but even if we did, according to the t&c's we would not be allowed to have a bag more than 6kg. here is what they say

The ski & snowboard bag must contain the pair of skis or snowboard ONLY and weigh no more than 6kgs. Boot bags count towards your overall weight limit on all flights, as do skis on some scheduled flights

so, i dont think i will be wearing my sallos, but i think it is probably a good idea to put those in your hand luggage - oh i can hear the hubby now!! do we have to have so many bags? do you really need your straightners? lol

The only "ski" item I wear on the plane is one of my jackets.
Salopettes would be too hot & I'd look even more of a wally with my ski boots on!

I do the same, although I often dont pay for ski carriage depending on the airline as it only goes in the tour ops pockets.

Ski bags were being weighed at Grenoble, I had to put my foot under it so it showed at 12kgs, as it was almost twice that weight.

As for this business with ski boots, I was told that ski boots and helmets were catagorically not allowed as hand luggage at Grenoble. WRONG. No one checked anything, and it would have been possible to take boots through without a problem. I am going to do so next time in case my luggage stays in Gatwick for 3 days again
