On this subject, I've just finished putting together my new work bench. It uses clamps instead of vices. The working height is great, and using an old dresser makes storing the tools etc. easy. I was a little worried, how sturdy the clamps would be, but it's rock solid. Most important tool of course - a bottle of beer. Next little project will be to attach a coarse file to the back shelf, for a built in scraper sharpener.

It's free standing. It's in the laundry room for the winter, but will go out to the garage when the season ends. It's too cold in the garage in the winter. I was pleasantly surprised at how solid it is when working. I thought the long bars on the clamps might flex, but they don't at all. The dresser, I picked up at a charity shop for about $25, and the clamps at a DIY store for $18 a set (I needed two sets - four clamps). The sets included a bunch of small clamps which work better than the ones I had for holding files on the guide. Other small clamps included will be great for fixing delaminations.
