I think the important things is, and this is what I plan to do, is not diet necessarily but change eating habits. I will be cutting down portion sizes, stop snacking on naughty things and have a little treat or two at the weekend.

And get my bike out :D

These are the important part of diet that have worked for me in the past.

Never get hungry - if you are hungry, your body will start storing fat. small meals and lots of healthy snacks. eat several times a day, with a light snack before bed.

Avoid fat - a smear of a good omega 3 spread, or canola mayonnaise in a sandwich is ok

Whole grain everything - bread, crackers, granola bars, etc. try to eat twice the RDA of fibre. You will fart a lot, but what's worse, flab or flatulance.

If you drink an alcoholic drink - walk it off. alcohol provides energy, allowing the food you have eaten to be stored as fat.

Avoid simple carbs (white flour, sugar) - they are as bad as fat in food.

Pasta can be good - if it is very el dente

Most of this is about keeping your glycemic index low, but not so low, that your body thinks that it needs to store fat.

Aerobic exercise on it's own, doesn't work well for most people, unless it goes along with some strength training. Muscle burns fat, and increasing your muscle mass just a little, will make a huge difference.

Surely, Trencher, not good for global warming, isn't there a methane problem created?

Agree with all that Trencher says, except that if you are using omega 3 spread, that implies bread.Verboten!

Breakfast. all bran, half of the calories of most other cerials.

Lunch. Salad, with sardines, eat as much salad as possible, no salad dressing, just pepper.

Evening. Chicken or Fish with as much veggies as you want. Use a non-stick, never cook with oil. No potatoes, or just the odd one.

Trencher is right, you will very quickly be in the England Fart Team, with a strong chance of a gold medal.

Without doing anything else, you will lose weight. So that just leaves the alchohol. Exercise it off.

First, I should say that I am not in my best condition at the moment. My body fat is running about 21% and I am on a cooking binge. Just made Malaysian ginger chicken, full of creamed coconut, and sesame oil. So much of dieting and exercise is about how you are doing mentally, and I've been a little pissed off for several months.

Anyway, about bread. When I was at 12% to 15% body fat about five years ago (in my late forties), I was eating at least 6 slices of whole grain, high fibre bread every day. Some times if I had pizza bread for dinner it would be another two (or three) slices.

Here's my recipe for healthy pizza bread. One of the ways to make up for the taste of fat, which we all seem to crave, is to use ingredients that have strong flavours.

Toast the bread (whole grain, high fibre) until mid brown.

Mix a little tomato paste with garlic, and Italian herbs. Brush it lightly on the bread.

I like to put sliced mushrooms and chopped leeks on next.

Grate a little of a very strong cheese. Sprinkle it very sparingly on the toast. I use Ementaller.

Sprinkle with a little more Italian herbs and roasted garlic powder.

Place in oven or under grill (broiler) to light brown.

Hardly any fat, but pretty tasty when the rest of the family is eating real pizza. I would eat two slices.

Another food item you should include is milk. With high fibre cereals (there are some good ones, that don't taste like cardboard), or as fat free yogurt. Four or five servings a day has been shown to improve weight loss. It's also a good source of protein for the muscle you will want to develop

Summarising-avoid high caloric food and refined carbohydrates. In case of the occasional boozy treat swaet it out. I need to suffer a bit otherwise I would feel I´m not dieting so I´m going to combine a low caloric and low carbs diet. Instead of milk I´m having soya milk(Tesco´s is the lowest carbs).Swimming is a must for me:inctreases my O2 consumption, alleviates my backache and in a way relaxes me. I need the treadmill/country ski apparatus to harden the remnants of flesh and gain aerobic endurance. Cycling or other gymm tools suitable for the muscle groups used for skiing would be a bonus. I will ask the trainers at David Lloyd´s.
Let´s see how I could manage the educational events(lectures/presentations followed by dinner) I regularly attend, fortnightly.I would have to sweat them out as well.
