All good information here. The Treble Cone Race Academy near Wanaka. One of the
instructors is Klaus Mair, the gent who sells his carving dvd on You Tube and his
website. Anyone been to this place? I bit advanced for me now but maybe later

We stayed in the Cliffords Hotel at Wanaka (it is where the Norwegian ski team train) and although we were there in November 94, it was clear to see where the skiing was and how it operated (it was their spring in NZ). South Island is very much like Scotland in parts and I gather the skiing is too. It will be a totally different experience to a European alpine setting, but I guess this is why you want to go.

Fab place, shame it is such a long way away!
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

The south island is a fantastic part of the world and is a must visit. Queenstown is also a great place to stay when doing some skiing down there. Wanaka is also brilliant with a small town feel to it compared to the bright lights of Queenstown. Which is best? It's a tough question, and really it is up to where you have the best contacts and which one you feel most at home in. Fly into Christchurch and get the bus down is very easy or fly into queenstown if you got it in the budget.

If you are looking for a ski instructor course one of the best is www.sitco.co.nz out of queenstown.

best of luck

Thanks to you for your replies. Now, which NZ destination has the better teaching school
for lower intermediates, like me, aspiring for a little bit more tuition.
I want to get to the black runs before the trip to Canada or Europe in 2010.

I grew up in NZ. I remember when I was a kid skiing at a great little field called Ohau. It's in the central South Island (mckenzie country). Small but beautiful. Try it if you ever get down that way.

Hey guys. I was born in Queenstown! great place to ski! Queenstown is located on the in otago in the southern half of the south island of new Zealand. getting accommodation in Queenstown is easy and there are two mountains very close to town called coronet peak and the Remarkables. Both mountains have a wide range of trails for all levels of skiers. for advanced skiers there are also many heli-skiing companies working out of Queenstown. Queenstown is also only a 45 min drive from Wanaka which has three ski fields. Cardrona (home of the southern hemispheres biggest half pipe) treble cone and snow park ( a huge park for free skiers and snowboarders. Queenstown also has a lot of great tourist attractions so is defiantly worth a visit!!!
