One other thought. If I had damaged my hamstrings would I not have had any discomfort since? I am pretty fit at the minute and do not get any pain when I do any form of exercise. Just wondering.

doesn't sound like hamstring tbh, although I'm no expert so get someone to check. Sounds more like you've pulled a groin muscle. As said further up the thread, make sure you do plenty of stretches to warm up first.
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!
