We rented from Grenoble last year, worked out cheaper than booking transfers for 4 of us and we got up to Arc 1950 about 2 hrs + before all the tour buses from the same flight started rolling in. By that time we'd got passes, had a nice wee ski and were enjoying a late lunch.
We had booked a small 4x4, but they ended up upgrading us at no charge to a large 4x4 - ski chains and ski roof rack were included in the price.
Just keep shopping around for the best deal.

Thanks again everyone, so great advise.
It looks as though we will either be driving, or flying, anf hiring a car. I quite fanct the driving route myself. I`ve got no issues in driving long distances, and like the idea of getting to the resort during the day, and sorting out ski passes and hire for friends and maybe even get a few hours skiing in!
Does anyone know the approx. cost of all the tolls? i`ve had a guess at about 50-70 Euros each way, but could be way out!

Hi,
That's about right for the tolls. Save time by buying your ski passes online before you go- www.lesarcs.com/?lang=en click on glide then ski pass on the left hand side.
Once you have the pass sent to you, in future years you just recharge online.

We have driven to Les Arcs for the last 8 years at Feb half term (one of the busiest times of the year) and apart from the first year (21 hours to get back - heavy snow everywhere) it has always been a doddle. However, we usually drive down on the Friday and stay in a B&B nearby (called Molliebon just near Rosiere). The traffic is really light and usually takes 9 hours from Calais. It then takes 30 minutes to get into resort, pick up skis (already have passes online) and get an extra day skiing on empty slopes. When we come back we ski until about 2pm on the Saturday (more empty slopes) and then drive back and stay in a Premiere Classe by Lyon or Dijon and get back to Bucks about lunchtime on Sunday. We get a day and half more skiing and with 3 kids it is cheaper than flying. If you are going to Peisey you will not need to drive through Bourg as you turn off before you get there but still do have to drive up the valley which can be very very slow on a Saturday (depending on when you arrive of course)as you have to pass Plagne and Valmorel and have all the traffic on its way to Les Arc, Roseiere, Tignes and Val D'Isere.
